During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the North West and Hudson�s Bay companies extended their operations beyond the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Charles Augustus Stoddard (1833-1920), a Presbyterian clergyman, was the editor of the New York Observer, 1885-1902.
