Three species of chemosynthetic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria have been isolated from the leaching waters of copper mining areas. These species are: The sulphur-oxidizzing Thiobacillus concretivorus, the iron-oxidizing Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, and the sulfur- and iron-oxidizing bacterium closely resembling Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

The chemistry involved in the microbial dissolution of iron and copper from such sulfide minerals as pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covellite, and bornite is described. The chemical criteria used to evaluate the activity of microorganisms on these minerals were changes in pH, ferric iron produced, and oxygen consumption.
