DOWNLOAD EBOOKWritten by leading experts in language and cognition, this groundbreaking behavior analysis textbook brings the study of verbal behavior into the 21st century with cutting-edge research. Students and clinicians in the burgeoning field of applied behavior analysis will find the theoretical foundation they need to effectively help the increasingly diverse clients seeking their services. The origins of behavior analysis can be traced to the pioneering work of B.F. Skinner. Skinner’s fundamental insights into how human behavior is shaped, maintained, and can be changed were powerful and far-reaching. Some of Skinner’s most innovative contributions were in the study of language. Behavior analytic work in the area of language and cognition did not stop with Skinner, however. Indeed, Skinner’s work in this area has inspired considerable expansion, particularly with an eye toward more sophisticated verbal and cognitive repertoires. This important volume provides an overview of the concepts and core behavioral processes involved in language and cognition. You’ll find a deeper exploration of complex linguistic and cognitive skills, including generative responding, learning by observation, and perspective taking. Also included are clinically supported interventions based in mindfulness, psychological flexibility, and emotion regulation to help clients improve complex language, social, and academic skills. The future of behavior analysis is here. With its focus on the importance of language and cognition, this textbook is a must-read for anyone studying or practicing in the science of behavior.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAbout the Book India has a rich grammatical tradition, still extant in the form of PÀõini’s grammar as well as the theories of verbal cognition. These two together provide a formal theory of language communication. The formal nature of the theory makes it directly relevant to the new technology called Natural Language Processing. This book, first presents the key concepts from the Indian Grammatical Tradition (IGT) that are necessary for understanding the information flow in a language string and its dynamics. A fresh look at these concepts from the perspective of Natural Language Processing is provided. This is then followed by a concrete application of building a parser for Sanskrit using the framework of Indian Grammatical Tradition. This book not only documents the salient pieces of work carried out over the last quarter century under Computational Paninian Grammar, but provides the first comprehensive exposition of the ideas involved. It fills a gap for students of Computational Linguistics/Natural Language Processing who are working on Indian languages using PÀõinian Grammatical Framework for developing their computational models and do not have direct access to the texts in Sanskrit. Similarly for the Sanskrit scholars and the students it provides an example of concrete application of the Indian theories to solve a contemporary problem. About the Author Amba Kulkarni is a computational linguist. Since 1991 she has been engaged in showing the relevance of Indian Grammatical Tradition to the field of computational linguistics. She has contributed towards the building of Anusaarakas (language accessors) among English and Indian languages. She is the founder head of the Department of Sanskrit Studies, University of Hyderabad established in 2006. Since then her focus of research is on use of Indian grammatical theories for computational processing of Sanskrit texts. Under her leadership, a consortium of institutes developed several computational tools for Sanskrit and also a prototype of Sanskrit–Hindi Machine Translation system. In 2015, she was awarded a “Vishishta Sanskrit Sevavrati Sammana” by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi for her contribution to the studies and research on Sanskrit-based knowledge system. She was a fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla during 2015-17.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKLanguage has most consistently been chosen as the key to understanding the human mind and to providing the building blocks necessary for achieving other specificities in human cognition: abstract/propositional thought, recursivity, decoupling of current situation, creativity, and conscious control. It is not so clear how language influences human cognition. This book discusses research regarding verbal ability and cognition.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOriginally published in 1974, this volume presents up-to-date original research and theory in the field of cognition. The contributors survey the most intriguing problems of the area, including the construction of memory, retrieval from memory, concept formation, and problem solving. Also considered in the light of current cognitive theory are the fundamental questions of how language is formed and how learning takes place. The volume often views past theory and data from the perspective of new theoretical insights and provides challenging alternatives to the interpretation of previous experimentation.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOriginally published in 1980, this is a book about the psychology of figurative language. It is however, eclectic and therefore should be of interest to professionals and students in education, linguistics, philosophy, sociolinguistics, and other concerned with meaning and cognition. The editors felt there was a pressing need to bring together the growing empirical efforts of this topic. In a sense, recognition of the theoretical importance of figurative language symbolized the transition from the psycholinguistics of the 1960s to that of the late 1970s, that is from a linguistic semantics to a more comprehensive psychological semantics with a healthy respect for context, inference, world knowledge, and above all creative imagination. The organization of the volume reflects the more basic, general concerns with cognition – from historical and philosophical background, through problems of mental representation and semantic theory, to developmental trends, and to applications in problem solving.
