This book is the first to document the remarkable history of the International Institute of Design (IID), an independent school of architecture founded and directed by Alvin Boyarsky from 1970 to 1972, and highlights a pivotal episode in Boyarsky's career, who is best known for his subsequent role as chairman of the Architectural Association (1971-90). Launched in the wake of the institutional upheavals that had swept schools of architecture during the late 1960s, the IID critically introduced an alternative model of architectural education: one that culled an international assortment of teaching methods, design strategies, theories and projects. The IID's main preoccupation was the organisation of three Summer Sessions, during which students and participants from over 40 different countries gathered in London to take part in a dense programme of specialised workshops, seminars and lectures. Topics ranged from cybernetics to vernacular housing traditions in Africa, from the legacy of Le Corbusier to the work of the Italian Radicals.

But what if we stopped dividing the United States and Mexico into two separate nations, and instead studied their shared histories, cultures and economies, acknowledging them as parts of a single region? In 2018, under the direction of Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao, 13 architecture studios and their students across the United States and Mexico undertook the monumental task of attempting to rethink the US/Mexico border as a complex and dynamic, but also cohesive and integrated, region. In 1927, Buckminster Fuller's “World Town Plan—4D Tower” proposes to solve global housing problems with mobile structures delivered and installed by a Zeppelin. Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koolhaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas' thinking on preservation, including his practice's entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas' readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a working manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA's work from within the discipline of preservation.
