Excerpt from The Whirlpool Harvey Rolfe was old enough to dine with deliberation, young and healthy enough to sauce with appetite the dishes he thoughtfully selected. You perceived in him the imperfect epicure. His club had no culinary fame; the dinner was merely tolerable; but Rolfe's unfinished palate flattered the second-rate cook. He knew nothing of vintages; it sufficed him to distinguish between Bordeaux and Burgundy; yet one saw him raise his glass and peer at the liquor with eye of connoisseur. All unaffectedly; for he was conscious of his shortcoming in the art of delicate living, and never vaunted his satisfactions. He had known the pasture of poverty, and the table as it is set by London landladies; to look back on these things was to congratulate himself that nowadays he dined. Beyond the achievement of a vague personal distinction at the Metropolitan Club, he had done nothing to make himself a man of note, and it was doubtful whether more than two or three of the members really liked him or regarded him with genuine interest. His introduction to this circle he owed to an old friend, Hugh Carnaby, whose social position was much more clearly defined: Hugh Carnaby, the rambler, the sportsman, and now for a twelvemonth the son-in-law of Mrs. Ascott Larkfield. Excerpt from People of the Whirlpool: From the Experience Book of a Commuter's Wife Beside the curl, and covering mother's diaries, lies a square white volume, the first part of my Experience Boke before mentioned, and upon it two queer fat little pairs of bronze kid shoes, buttonless and much worn on the toes, telling a tale of feet that dragged and ankles that wobbled through inexperience in walking. Ah yes! I'm quite awake and the same Barbara, though looking over a wider and eye-open ing horizon, having had three rows of candles, ten in a row, around my last birthday cake and one extra' in the middle, which extravagance has constrained the family to use lopsided, tearful, pink candles ever since. Excerpt from In the Whirlpool of War Our niece Nelly's husband, Emile Lecourt, returned from Attigny at half-past three, bathed in perspiration and greatly upset. It's all up we've got to go, he cried, sinking down on our doorstep. The village folk who saw him arrive came up to question him. They all refused to believe him, though the young fellow angrily protested that he spoke the truth, and swore that the Attigny mayor's secretary had acquainted him with the Official dispatch. Excerpt from The Whirlpool: Scenes From Toronto Police Court A police court is a place of tragic gloom, though like the ground where Ophelia was laid to rest, it is sometimes enlivened by the jests of the grave diggers; it is a whirlpool into which offenders against law and order are sucked; a justice shop where men, sinned against and sinning, receive their deserts; a pit of peradventure into which men sometimes slip; a guillotine which falls with shuddering swiftness upon the necks of those who would menace society; a house of tears and sighs and evil temper; a clearing house, where parcels of humanity are valued and classified and some times - not too often - it is a mercy seat. Excerpt from The Whirlpool of Europe: Austria-Hungary and the Habsburgs No attempt has been made, either in text or illustra tions, to do justice to the wonderful scenery which is the framework of this picture of national and political evo lation. To do so would involve not one but several volumes, and the present work is merely an outline which the reader may fill in at his leisure by reference to more detailed studies. The authors feel that the historical sketch may alarm some readers by its scope, but it was found impossible to give a true impression of modern Austria and Hungary without tracing their connection with the extinct Holy Roman Empire and the modern German one, or without following, from its earliest stages, the career of the House of Habsburg. The key to the situa tion lies to a great extent in the historical evolution of the various parts of the Dual Monarchy and in their relations to the ruling house.
