Excerpt from Modern Advertising The American merchant works for money in ex actly the sense that a great painter works for money; the high price which is paid for his picture is a very welcome indication of the general appreciation of his art: but he would never get this appreciation if he were working for the money instead of his artistic ideals. Economically to Open up this gigantic coun try, to bring the fields and forests, rivers and moun tains into the service of economic progress, to incite the millions of inhabitants to have new needs and to satisfy these by their own resourcefulness, to increase the wealth of the nation, and finally economically to rule the world and within the nation itself to raise the economic power of the individual to undreamt-of im portance, has been the work which has fascinated the American. And every individual has felt his co operation to be ennobled by his firm belief in the value of such an aim for the culture of the world. Excerpt from Illustration in Advertising Advertisers are periodically called upon to decide whether or not their campaigns Shall be illustrated. The most ardent supporters of pictures in advertising will admit that occasions arise and peculiar conditions develop, which call for all-type dis play. To use illustrations for the sake of having pictures in the advertisement is a false premise and folly. Why then, are embellishments employed at all? What functions are obligatory? What useful selling purpose is achieved? Every stroke of the pen, every mark of the brush, every artifice of the studio Should be employed only as a commercial asset. Advertising is at its lowest ebb when it becomes a colorful luxury The growth of advertising, phenomenal and spectacular as it has been, is interlocked with the constructive things which it has really accomplished. The most beautiful canvas by the most accomplished painter, inexpertly applied, may be a detriment rather than a force to keep factory wheels humming. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.
