"Daybreak comes and -- with it -- orders from the Emperor [Nero] to bring the Christians to the arena. Centurion Careb, highest in rank, would obey. Dodinius, haunted by the memories of people he has previously led to execution, objects and is mortally wounded. Marius, though no sudden convert, rebels and elects to face death with the other victims rather than live on in the evils of Rome's 'established order.' ... Deborra and the dying Dodinius convince Marius that he must try to live and fight on -- taking with him the valuable Epistle from Paul. Thus the Scroll of the New Testament emeres triumphant over the Sword of Roman Despotism." p. 3

It's Brent Weeks meets China Mieville in this wildly imaginative fantasy debut featuring high action, elegant writing, and sword and sorcery with a Chinese flare. Persimmon Gaunt and Imago Bone are a romantic couple and partners in crime. Persimmon is a poet from a well-to-do family, who found herself looking for adventure, while Imago is a thief in his ninth decade who is double-cursed, and his body has not aged in nearly seventy years. Together, their services and wanderlust have taken them into places better left unseen, and against odds best not spoken about. Now, they find themselves looking to get away, to the edge of the world, with Persimmon pregnant with their child, and the most feared duo of assassins hot on their trail. However, all is never what it seems, and a sordid adventure--complete with magic scrolls, gangs of thieves, and dragons both eastern and western--is at hand.

Yamamoto Kansuke was a 16th Century general under Takeda Shingen in the Warring States Period of Japan. This is a collection of four versions of a document attributed to him. Each of the four versions describe sword, spear and military tactics that are fully illustrated by different Edo Era artists. The text adds explanations on the underlying feeling fighting in each illustration. Long thought to be a fictional character, historical letters mentioning Yamamoto Kansuke and establishing him as a authentic historical figure are reproduced and translated. There are additional chapters highlighting techniques in Kansuke's book that also appears in the Chinese Bubishi military manual. Finally, some of the unusual weapons within the Bubishi are explained.

First Published in 1997. The title of this book is derived from an ancient Jewish teaching, attributed to a certain Rabbi Eleazar of Modi'in, who lived in the land of Israel during the third century of the common era. As far as we know, Rabbi Eleazar was the first sage to take homiletic advantage of the alliteration of safra and saifa, Aramaic terms which literally translate (respectively) as 'a scroll' and 'a sword'. A plain reading of this text leaves no doubt that its author intended to project a figurative contrast between two distinct spheres of human endeavour.

The Book of Judith tells the story of a fictitious Jewish woman beheading the general of the most powerful imaginable army to free her people. The parabolic story was set as an example of how God will help the righteous. Judith's heroic action not only became a validating charter myth of Judaism itself but has also been appropriated by many Christian and secular groupings, and has been an inspiration for numerous literary texts and works of art. It continues to exercise its power over artists, authors and academics and is becoming a major field of research in its own right. The Sword of Judith is the first multidisciplinary collection of essays to discuss representations of Judith throughout the centuries. It transforms our understanding across a wide range of disciplines. The collection includes new archival source studies, the translation of unpublished manuscripts, the translation of texts unavailable in English, and Judith images and music.
