Excerpt from The Church School and the Sunday School Normal Guide Plain men, indeed, were the fishermen of Galilee who first taught the Gospel, but they were not uneducated men. They may not have been familiar with the subtle ties of Greek philosophy, nor were they ranked as schol ars in the then approved Jewish schools. But they Were men of native strength, taught in the Hebrew Scriptures. They enjoyed intimate fellowship with the wisest of teachers for three years. They were earnest men and then, there came upon them a supernatural baptism. This gave them power over the dogmatists of Judea, the false philosophers of Greece, and the masses of the people, both Jews and Greeks. Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The author deems it of sufiicient importance to add that it was designed to issue this edition, like the first, in the same handsome and rather costly form in which most of the works for children are now published. There is true philosophy in making books for children outwardly attractive, wrote the late Bishop Bowman when strongly recommending that this should not be forgotten even in the cheap edition. There is no doubt but that in being given a sensible importance, 8 book of this character would increase in spiritual influence. However, it has been thought best, in order to bring it within the reach of all, to diminish its size and cost by taking out the portions relating to the private Christian life of the child, and to readmit them in another issue to accompany this. For the same reason, although beauty of typography has been cared for, nearly all other ornament in printing and binding has been omitted. In its present form it goes before the Church for trial on its intrinsic merits alone, and may the blessing of God go with it. Excerpt from The Sunny Side: A Book of Religious Songs for the Sunday School and the Home The feature of the book to which we desire to call especial attention, is a collection of nearly two-score German Child and Folk Songs which it contains, and which have been selected with great care from the rich mine of German song. Many of the accompany ing poems have been happily translated for us by Rev. Charles T. Brooks, who has kindly given his valuable services to our cause. We trust the sweet ness and sterling quality of these melodies will make them favorites in the Sunday-school. For the rest, we have tried to keep the tunes within the range of the children's voices, have printed the words under the music wherever possible, observed a natural order in the succession of the hymns, added two indexes for convenient reference, and thus aimed at producing a practical, helpful book in the religious nurture of the young. And so may this little work, the fruit of many hours of pleasant labor, go into many a Sunday-school and home, to inculcate a. Natural, joyous piety, and bring the cheer and blessing of song into the hearts of. Young and old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from By-Products of the Rural Sunday School Increasing attention is being given to the Sunday school. This is due to the recognition that it has become the most important agency in the religious instruction of our youth. We do not refer to the Sunday school apart from the Church, but to the Church working through the Sunday school. We are beginning to realize that In America both the Church and the nation must depend largely upon the Sunday school for the Christian instruction of our boys and girls, as well as for the Bible study of our adults. Earnest efforts are being made to render our Sunday schools more efficient, so that better and more abundant results may be obtained from the work done in them. Consideration, however, has thus far been given for the most part to the larger schools in our towns and cities. It is well for us, therefore, to have our attention directed to the smaller rural schools. The majority of our Sunday schools are of this character. In many cases these schools are taking the place of churches in scattered communities. A church could not be supported, but a Sunday school can be carried on by the people themselves, and may become the center of the religious life of the neighborhood. Excerpt from The Sunday School Organized for Service This little book and the charts it contains are the outgrowth of a series of lectures on Sunday School Management, delivered before the Superintendents Section of a Sunday school institute held in Chicago in October, 1913. Nothing was presented to the superintendents at that time except one chart and the syllabi of the lectures. The chief interest centered about the chart, because it placed conveniently before the eye a concrete outline of a Sunday school organized for service. It also presented at once a goal to be reached by schools that had not measured up to all that it required. With a knowledge of what was yet to be attained there came, in many cases, the desire for better things, and the chart was eagerly sought for. The belief was expressed, that, framed and hung upon the wall of the Sunday school room, it would be an incentive to increased activity and greater efficiency. Realizing, however, that the chart was not as complete as it should be, the author sent it to about one hundred of the most aggressive and successful superintendents and Sunday school specialists throughout the country, with a request for suggestions looking toward its improvement. Excerpt from The Country Sunday-School And do you wonder that this lad went from the Sunday-school into the church? Spiritual parents, pious neighbors, the most careful religious instruc tion in day-school, the most earnest preaching every month - all these could not be without effect. A meeting was held one March and this twelve year-old boy was one of several who stood up confessing Christ. On the way home that day, his father asked him about his decision and his mother further questioned him; both were satis fied, and so he was one of fourteen who were im mersed in the crystal stream that swept through the valley. To that profession and hope he clung with increasing joy through the years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
