Excerpt from The Pine Trees of the Rocky Mountain Region The wood of limber pine is very narrow-ringed, on account of the slow growth Of the tree, and has only a thin layer of, sapwood, which is nearly white. Freshly cut heartwood is a pale lemon yellow. In texture the wood is rather soft but firm. A cubic foot of dry wood weighs about 27 pounds. Limber pine is occasionally cut for rough construction lumber which is used locally, the quality of the lumber being poor because of numerous knots. The wood is also used locally for fuel and sometimes for rough cabins and mine props. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Engelmann Spruce in the Rocky Mountains: With Special Reference to Growth, Volume, and Reproduction Engelmann spruce forms the spruce type of forest in the Rocky Mountains. With its chief associates it composes dense stands close to timber line, at the headwaters and along the upper courses of streams. These forests retard the melting of snows and the run-off from precipitation, and at the same time protect the soil from drying out and from erosion. In approach to true forest conditions few other forest types in the region rival these stands and no other type equals them over so large an area in the, higher altitudes. Their protective value is proportionately great. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cypress and Juniper Trees of the Rocky Mountain Region K So far as possible the use of technical descriptive terms has been avoided, and only such distinguishing characters (color, texture, etc.) are defined as can not be shown clearly in a black and white drawing. The illustrations represent foliage, fruits, seeds, and other important parts of the trees in their natural size, so that the element of size, so often distinctive, as well as the form in the specimen studied, can be easily compared with the drawing. To insure accuracy in details practically all of the illustrations are line drawings of photographs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
