Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal, 1891 Although the value of a Club Journal as a means of circulating information must be so apparent to members as to render editorial introduction almost unnecessary, it may not be out of place, in this the first number, to indicate briefly one or two points in connection with it. Probably it will surprise many readers to learn that there are more than three hundred mountains in Scotland whose height exceeds feet above sea-level! Even were our explorations to be restricted to mountains of no lesser altitude, here truly is a formidable undertaking. Their very names might furnish us with philological study for considerable time to come, without trenching upon the more scientific aspects of their botany, zoology, and climatology; and even if we content ourselves with them from a topographical or a climbing point, it will be long indeed before they are exhausted. But fine walks, hard climbs, and magnificent scenery are by no means restricted to the higher mountains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal Next morning, 18th May, we started at nine, and followed the deer path from the post office up to a corral, then branched off to our left (east) over rough ground, and continued along the side of the hill. To the north we could see heavy showers clearing and recurring, but to us the heavens were kind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal, 1913, Vol. 12 The fine weather was showing signs of breaking up when we left Yorkshire in the afternoon of the ust june, it grew worse as we sped north, and when we reached Inverness at 5 am. Next morning to find the gay bunting that adorned the Station Square drooping under a steady drizzle, we could only say to each other: I told you sol But a hot bath, a change into climbing kit, and Garden's smiling face at breakfast, restored our courage. And we set off in a motor car at a.m. For Benula Lodge in Glen Cannich, by way of Drumnadrochit, Glen Urquhart, and Invercannich. Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal, Vol. 11 The majority Of our Club has come, and word goes round that our Honorary Editor retires. Now to the Club the journal may be said to fulfil two functions. It binds us together, and it bodies forth our actions and ideas to others. In it we present ourselves and our opinions as we would have others see us. SO he who has borne the brunt Of producing it for all these years deserves our warmest thanks and regard. He has been going to and fro among us for the last nineteen years, so long that few Of us remember when he was not our Editor - many suppose he was born so, and grew up with the Club. As a matter of now ancient history, Mr J. G. Stott was our first Editor; he started the journal, saw it through its babyhood, and gave it the format which we know so well. That Editor still lives, but under the Southern Cross, and I have no doubt that he Often surveys with pride the nine generations which have followed his own child - the first volume.
