Excerpt from The Russian Bolshevik Revolution This book is not written to make out a case, but to set forth what appear to be the significant facts. It is Offered on the theory that intelligent people are tired of being victims of propaganda about Russia and will welcome a book that is not trying to give their minds a certain twist. I can truthfully aver that when I set pen to paper I had no rigid mental attitudes toward the phases of the Russian revolution, so that such interpretations as I venture on have come out of my study of the facts themselves. Excerpt from The Russian Revolution The Russian Revolution has interested the whole world in Russia and the Russian people. The peoples of the West are uneasy about the Communist experiment, accompanied as it is by a forced implanting of atheism such as the world has never yet known - an experiment carried on in a vast country which is little known to, and little understood by, the West. What must be of great interest is the psycholo gical problem How was it possible for Holy Russia to be turned into an arsenal of militant atheism? How is it that a people who are religious by their very structure and live exclu sively by faith have proved to be such a fruitful field for anti-religious propaganda To explain that, to understand Russian anti-religious psy chology, one must have an insight into the religious psychology of the Russian people. Excerpt from From Liberty to Brestlitovsk: The First Year, of the Russian Revolution I have tried in this book to elucidate, as far as was in my power, the development of the fundamental ideas of the Socialist parties in the Russian Revolution and their reflection in the life of the masses. A revolution is a very complex thing, especially in such an immense country as Russia, with its large and varied population, and it goes without saying that, far from claiming to have described it exhaustively, I realise only too clearly that there are numbers of questions on which I have barely touched. Excerpt from Through the Russian Revolution In 1917 the social and economic fabric of the land was shot to pieces. Ten million peasants dragged from their ploughs were dying in the trenches. Millions more were perishing of cold and hunger in the cities While the corrupt ministers intrigued with the Germans and the court held bacchanalian revels with the notorious monk, Rasputin. Even the Cadet, Milyukov, was forced to say: History does not know Of another govern ment so stupid, so dishonest, so cowardly, so treacherous. All governments rest Upon the patience Of the poor. It seems everlasting, but there comes an end to it. It came in Russia in March, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. Excerpt from Russia, White or Red Taking leave Of absence from my desk as dramatic editor Of The Indianapolis News, I set out in Septem ber, 1917, by the Pacific Ocean, Japan, and Siberia, and arrived in Moscow in the midst of the Bolshevik Revolution. Without official or other binding rela tionships, therefore, I felt free to follow and Observe and reach conclusions upon the Russian upheaval unhampered by the necessity for hasty judgment or by compliance with the fixed policy Of another. After six months on Russian soil the first half year Of the Bolshevik regime and, I think, the most signi ficant single period thus far in the course Of the Rus sian Revolution I brought both Of my errands to completion and returned home by the same route in the summer Of 1918. Excerpt from Russia in Revolution I am indebted to my exile friends - especially the late Sergius Stepniak and the late Col. Lavrov, Mr. Volk hovsky, Mr. Tchaykovsky, and Dr. Soskice; to the files of Free Russia, La Tribune Russe, and the publi cations Of the Russian secret press; and to friends in Russia whom it would be inconvenient to name. A few passages, including a letter written in Moscow on the eve Of the recent crisis, have appeared in the Daily Chronicle and other journals. Excerpt from The History of the Russian Revolution to Brest-Litovsk Preparing a pamphlet intended for the workers of Germany, austria-hungary, and of all other countries. The bourgeois Press of the whole of Europe is unanimous in its slanders and execrations of the proletarian regime in Russia. The Socialist patriotic Press, bereft of courage and of faith in its own work, has revealed a total incapacity to understand and to interpret to the working masses the meaning of the Russian Revolution. I want to come to their help by means of the present booklet. I believe that the revolutionary workers of Europe and of other parts of the world will understand us. I believe that they will, in the near future, start on the same work as we are now engaged in, but that, aided by their greater experience and their more perfect intellectual and technical means, they will perform this work more. Excerpt from The Bolshevik Revolution: Its Rise and Meaning The memorable uprising of the Russian people indicates that not even the keenest discernment can always accurately appraise the immediate course of events dependent upon the action of the working class. There were but few among Socialists in Western and Middle Europe who held the belief that the War would lead to working-class control in Russia, and the conse quent removal of the gravest menace to a democratised Germany. Wide difference in conditions notwith standing, the intensification of work, never to be assuaged by proposals for industrial harmony between Capital and Labour, may lead to action here as unexpected as the events that mark the recent history of Russia. Though the members of the British Socialist Party were among the first to welcome the March Revolu tion they were not without misgiving as to the practical worth of the Provisional Government. The Revolution had been made in the name of the solidarity of the working classes and in order that the power of the possessors of land and capital might be abridged in the interests of the common people. The British Socialist Party was, Ibelieve, the first of European Socialist organisations to see that the predecessors of the Bolsheviks had no intention of erecting a social organisation based on the truths that Labour is the source of all economic values and that enduring peace will only be obtained by the international agreement of peeples. In our Party organ The Call, we urgedthat the taking of power by the Soviets was the one course that would save Russia from destruction at the hands of her enemies, within and without; the ultimate acceptance of that view and the administrative success of the Soviets prove the wisdom of that policy. With the general policy of the Bolsheviks the British Socialist Party is in hearty agreement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
