"Background: Effective and leading Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Management is a topic of interest and necessity for many organizations and EHS professionals. The role and responsibility of the EHS Manager in establishing an organization's commitment towards environmental stewardship and workplace safety (as elements of social responsibility) evolves continuously. Objective: The purpose of this thesis is to identify the roles and responsibilities of an effective EHS Manager, and those roles and responsibilities that support an organization achieving environmental stewardship and workplace safety. Method: Salient elements, actions, and characteristics identified as a role or responsibility of the EHS manager within the initial literature review were researched using a three step approach: attendance and participation at EHS conferences and expositions, review of professional literature, and in-depth analysis of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) full interviews conducted by the National Safety Council (NSC) for their annual article 'CEOs who Get It.' Results: An organization's commitment towards environmental stewardship and workplace safety requires the EHS Manager not only to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, but to provide effective leadership with voluntary EHS management systems and programs. The depth of this voluntary commitment to EHS is based on the organization's top manager/ executive, and the organization's vision and mission. Significance to EHS Management: The significance of this topic to EHS management is that it presents fundamental requirements of top line management, industry standards, and best practices not required under current regulation to ensure environmental stewardship and a safe workplace."--Abstract.

This volume has been prepared for the Environmental and Health & Safety Manager. The EH&S Manager is a new breed of corporate professionals that are faced with the responsibility of handling both environmental policy/issues and occupational safety issues within organizations. Throughout the 1980s there was a proliferation of health and safety departments, environmental compliance personnel, and technical people associated with handling pollution control and waste management. American industry has been over the last several years contracting and downsizing their operations. In doing so, many corporations, large and small, are demanding greater responsibilities be delegated to middle and line function management. In this regard, many corporations today are moving towards a single management entity, the EH&S Manager, who's responsibilities require extensive knowledge of both the environmental statutes and OSHA standards. This desk reference has been written as a compliance source for the EH&S Manager. The authors prefer to call the EH&S Manager an Occupational Safety Professional and use this designation interchangeably throughout the text. This individual, as stated above, has a dual responsibility that requires both technical and managerial skills in two arenas. In this regard, this book provides the working professional a reference on both the environmental regulations and industry safety standards. Additionally, it covers management practices for on-site hazard materials handling operations and constitutes an important reference for establishing hazard communication and training programs for employees.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is where companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations. To be socially responsible means going beyond fulfilling the legal expectations, by also investing 'more' into human capital, the environment and the relations with stakeholders. This report explores the interactions between CSR and safety and health at work both at company and policy level. Eleven company cases from six EU countries are presented as examples. CSR is a development that is taking root in a broad variety of industrial sectors and that is relevant for large companies as well as for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
