DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BC) in Eastern Arabia is a time of fundamental changes in subsistence, resource exploitation, and social complexity. In terms of material culture, this epoch is primarily known for its collective graves and monumental buildings, so-called towers, which were the focus of previous archaeological research. Domestic architecture, however, received much less attention. Therefore, in October 2016, the conference "Beyond Tombs and Towers - Domestic Architecture of the Umm an-Nar Period in Eastern Arabia" was held at Leiden University in the Netherlands with the aim of addressing this research gap. The fourth volume of the Arabia Orientalis series publishes the conference proceedings and includes participation from scientists based in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the USA, and Oman. The manifold contributions of the individual authors offer, for the first time, a comprehensive synopsis of Umm-Nar period domestic architecture in Eastern Arabia. The proceedings cover the sites of Umm an-Nar Island, Wadi Jizzi, Dahwa, Bat, Al-Zebah, and Ras al-Jinz, as well as addressing overarching aspects surrounding domestic architecture in the region such as chronology, subsistence, and the degree of sedentism of the population. Thus, this volume provides important insights into the way of life during this critical epoch on the Oman Peninsula.

This final report of survey and excavations by the Roots of Agriculture in Southern Arabia (RASA) Project addresses the development of food production and human landscapes, topics of enduring interest as scholarly conceptualizations of the Anthropocene take shape. Along with data from Manayzah, site of the earliest dated remains of clearly domesticated animals in Arabia, the volume also documents some of the earliest water management technologies in Arabia, thereby anchoring regional dates for the beginnings of pastoralism and of potential farming. The authors argue that the initial Holocene inhabitants of Wadi Sana were Arabian hunters who adopted limited pastoral stock in small social groups, then expanded their social collectives through sacrifice and feasts in a sustained pastoral landscape. While most previous investigations have been limited geographically to Egypt and the Levant, this volume focuses on the lesser-studied southeastern Arabian Peninsula, showing what death and burial can reveal about the lifestyles of the region’s prehistoric communities. In case studies from Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain, contributors explore the transition from the earliest to the most complex mortuary monuments in the Bronze Age and beyond. They consider sociopolitical and environmental factors that may have influenced mortuary practices and what skeletal biogeochemistry can reveal about changing mobility and access to food resources. They also discuss sites that illustrate more nuanced shifts in burial traditions that took place during the evolution of the Hafit to the Umm an-Nar cultures, a period of transformation often neglected because the semi-nomadic lifestyle of this intermediary culture left behind a limited archaeological record. Burial patterns reveal a shift from cairns to communal tombs that offers new insight into the relationship between the mortuary landscape and the living, while the presence of animal bones interred with human remains embodies the significance of herd management as symbols of both territoriality and reproduction. By using skeletal remains as a rich source of scientific data that complements studies of burial context, this volume represents an important turning point for mortuary research in the region. La seconda parte del volume, che raccoglie 14 contributi, è stata curata da Carlo Citter e Agostino Sotgia ed è dedicata agli Atti della Sessione speciale “Modelling the Landscape. From Prediction to Postdiction” della settima edizione della Landscape Archaeology Conference (Iași, Romania 10-15 September 2022). Si tratta di un tema dedicato all’uso dei modelli per lo studio dei paesaggi antichi, considerato sia attraverso l’approccio predittivo “tradizionale”, perché in uso dagli anni Novanta, sia attraverso quello postdittivo, che i curatori definiscono più “sperimentale”.
