The present study of the Caprimulgine genus Chordeiles found its origin in the attempt to identify nighthawks in Texas. It soon became evident that nothing short of a thorough revision of the two North American species, Chordeiles virginianus and Chordeiles acutipennis, would produce anything like satisfactory results. The material available for the effort consisted of 1,165 specimens, including the types of most of the valid forms distributed among three species: Chordeiles virginianus (780), C. acutipennis exilis (379), and C. rupestris (6).
