Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXI. CHRISTMAS EVE AT BROADLANDS. NEARLY eight years have passed since Effie Gordon was at last able to give her hand to the man of her choice, whom she had loved so long and so truly. Charles Sinclair, now in his thirty-fourth year, is no longer a briefless barrister, and bids fair to rise in his profession, as his father has done before him. The famous Q.C. is now Baron Sinclair, and one of the judges on the Bench. Many changes have taken place among the young people named in our story. Effie's youngest sister-in-law, Florence, and her brother George, the clergyman, have been married nearly as long as herself. Indeed, of all the bridesmaids who were present at Effie's wedding, only one, Esther Arnold, continues single. Her own absurd opinions led to a breach between her lover and herself, and as she is not likely to form another attachment, Esther knows that her fate is to remain unmarried. The disappointment, however, has done her good. It has taught her humility, and a more just appreciation of herself and her opinions. Her mother's delicate health, of late years, has also drawn out all her kindlier and unselfish characteristics. Frank Arnold and Mabel Vaughan have been married nearly a year, and the fortune given to Mabel by her father on her marriage, enables the young lawyer to extend his profession, and to live in a style suitable to his wife's former position. We shall hear of the little ones who have arrived to gladden the hearts of the young mothers since Effie's wedding day by-and-by. But the eight years that have rolled by since then have been, with a few drawbacks, years to Effie of complete happiness. As she now enters the nursery on the morning of Christmas Eve, to be appealed to by her two boys of five and...

DOWNLOAD EBOOKSet in Edwardian England and ideal for readers who enjoy Julie Klassen novels, this romance about an English aviation pioneer and the girl who falls in love with him is filled with adventure and faith. Isabella Grayson, the eldest daughter of a wealthy, English newspaper magnate, longs to become a journalist, but her parents don't approve. They want her to marry well and help them gain a higher standing in society. After she writes an anonymous letter to the editor that impresses her father, her parents reluctantly agree she can write a series of articles about aviation and the race to fly across the English Channel, but only if she promises to accept a marriage proposal within the year. When James Drake, an aspiring aviator, crashes his flying machine at the Grayson's new estate, Bella is intrigued. James is determined to be the first to fly across the Channel and win the prize Mr. Grayson's newspaper is offering. He hopes it will help him secure a government contract to build airplanes and redeem a terrible family secret. James wants to win Bella's heart, but his background and lack of social standing make it unlikely her parents would approve. If he fails to achieve his dream, how will he win the love and respect he is seeking? Will Bella's faith and support help him find the strength and courage he needs when unexpected events turn their world upside down?

DOWNLOAD EBOOKJournalist Dominic Dunne’s travels have rarely been ordinary, despite his best intentions. He has been travelling all his life, from the time his parents started their annual pilgrimage to the opal fields of Lightning Ridge. Since then he has trekked all over Australia and to some 60 countries, spending his life trying to satisfy his insatiable appetite for travelling, an addiction that has taken him to wonderful and sometimes dangerous places where he has met all manner of people. In this book Dominic uses insight and wit – and a good dollop of gossip – to capture the highlights (and lowlights) from destinations the world over. Dominic takes readers backstage with Nana Mouskouri in Greece and in search of the ghosts of Elvis Presley in Mississippi. He escapes marauding Americans at Noel Coward’s Jamaican sanctuary, crosses cranky guards in North Korea, rubs shoulders with Hillary Clinton in Washington and solves a life-long mystery in Zimbabwe. And he meets his namesake, the best-selling American author Dominick Dunne, with whom he forges an enduring friendship.
