Excerpt from The New-York Medical Journal, 1830, Vol. 1 The most authentic accounts refer its origin to Eastern coun tries. In I ndia and China, it appears to have been long known and practised, according to peculiar modes. It was introduced into Constantinople from the Mama, at a time when it was in general use, not only in Asiatic countries, but also in Barbary. 11 was stated to Dr. Russel, who resided long in Aleppo, that at Bagdad and Bassora, when the small-pox appeared in any dis triet of these cities, it was the custom to give notice by a public crier, in order that those who were so inclined might take the opportunity to have their children inoculated. Excerpt from The American Medical Journal, 1885, Vol. 13 Herewith we append a table which will show at a glance the field of study necessary to become a good diagnostician in the exanthematous diseases. We would ask the reader to pause for a moment and reflect upon the synopsis on the next page. To treat these diseases by taking up each subdivision as they appear in this table would weary the reader and defeat the pur pose we have at this time before us. My object is rather to point out an easy method of study by which the mind may grasp the subject, and hence I shall be able only to take up a subject here and there in my series of articles, leaving the investigator to pur sue the subject beyond the limits assigned me in this journal. Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1872, Vol. 15 I hold in my hands the record of the members of this Society in the last year. There are names among them of men who no longer adorn these seats. There is not one of them who has not been, when he had passed away from us, honora bly mentioned by us; there are a few, whose loss all of us shall long mourn, and whose memories we shall forever cher ish. The two members to whom I consider it my sacred duty to allude were Dr. Bibbins and Dr. Geo. T. Elliot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Brooklyn Medical Journal, Vol. 3: January-December, 1889 Granting that this affection is rare compared with its supposed frequency in former times, there is no doubt that it occurs as a pri -mary inflammation often enough to call for a large share of attention. Nothing new has been brought out regarding the pathology, except that chronic cellulitis, which has been a cherished notion with some, has been in the past few years denied an existence by good observers. I have also observed a peculiar complication of this affection which has not been noticed before, so far as I know, viz., an extension of the inflammation from the broad ligament to the sheath of the psoas muscle: the pus from the primary abscess burrowing outwards and upwards. Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1876, Vol. 24 It has therefore been difficult in all cases to decide how much the modified appearances they present have been the result of altered action, or merely variations that belong to the natural life of the substance. The determination of what constitutes the normal condi tion is, then, a matter of the first importance, and it is in this direction that the present inquiries have been made. The present essay is designed to embody a series of experimental researches upon the general subject of connective substances, with the view of determining some of the more important facts that have been matters Of controversy. Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1873, Vol. 17 In the following statement he reduces his Opinions to an axiom which may well be preserved: Whoever has acquired just and general ideas of the nature of a disease will seldom be at a loss how to apply them on particular occasions; and, to him who wants those ideas, no rules or directions will be of much consequence. He concludes his introductory as follows: As to those gentlemen who will neither read nor reason, but practise at a venture, and sport with the lives and limbs of their fellow-crea tures, I can only, with Dr. Huxham, advise them seriously to peruse the sixth commandment, which is, Thou shall not kill.'
