This edition includes the original version image illustrations as well.In "The Mucker", we're introduced to Billy Byrne, a tough guy from the slums of Chicago. Falsely accused of murder, Billy flees for San Francisco, only to get shanghaied by pirates. The pirates quickly put him to work helping to kidnap a wealthy young woman. But even that doesn't go as planned. Soon the pirates are shipwrecked among cannibals in the South Pacific, and Billy finds that he's not only the tough guy he thought he was-- he's in love with the heiress. Can he rescue her, and if he does, can he ever fit into her high society world? In "The Return of the Mucker", Billy is on the run again, this time to Mexico with his hobo friend Bridge. Billy finds work with a bandit general and Bridge at the ranch of a wealthy expatriate. The bandit has his sights on a bank to rob with Billy's expert criminal help. Bridge gets caught between his employer, his friendship with Billy, and his employers, none other than the lovely heiress and father from "The Mucker". With a civil war pending in Mexico, Billy and Bridge will have to face down the Mexican army and the bandits in order to get Billy's sweetheart safely back to the U.S.In "The Oakdale Affair", we follow further adventures of Bridge. Bridge finds himself sheltering from a storm with a mysterious thief. The pair rescues a young woman who's run afoul of her gangster boyfriend. It seems that everybody wants the loot that the theif stole, and somewhere out there is a kidnapped young woman who is the key to it all. Bridge will have a lot of juggling to do to keep gangsters, gypsies, and private detectives in line and solve the mystery at hand.

Burroughs calls up successful motifs from earlier works and recombines them in a roller-coaster fashion. The work starts as a social critique of the inner city, Chicago, but quickly moves to sea. A lost city of Japanese samurai can be found on a tiny Pacific island, and this serves as the action-filled turf of Billy Byrne, a Chicago street thug. He experiences a mutiny among pirates, encounters a lost race of Samurai head-hunter degenerates, must compete with another man for the love of beautiful Barbara, and travels to Mexico where Burroughs combines social history and the traditional Western.
