In the early sixties at the Royal College of Art in London, three extraordinary personalities collided to reshape contemporary art and literature. Barrie Bates (who would become Billy Apple in November 1962) was an ambitious young graphic designer from New Zealand, who transformed himself into one of pop art's pioneers. At the same time, his friend and fellow student David Hockney—young, Northern, and openly gay—was making his own waves in the London art world. Bates and Hockney travelled together, bleached their hair together, and, despite being two of London's rising art stars, almost failed art school together. And in the middle of it all was the secretary of the Royal College's Painting School—an aspiring young novelist called Ann Quin. Quin ghost-wrote her lover Bates's dissertation and collaborated with him on a manifesto, all the while writing Berg: the experimental novel that would establish her as one of the British literary scene's most exciting new voices. Taking us back to London's art scene in the late fifties and early sixties, award-winning writer Anthony Byrt illuminates a key moment in cultural history and tackles big questions: Where did Pop and conceptual art come from? How did these three remarkable young outsiders change British culture? And what was the relationship between revolutions in personal and sexual identities and these major shifts in contemporary art? From the Royal College to Coney Island and Madison Avenue, encountering R. D. Laing and Norman Mailer, Shirley Clarke, and Larry Rivers, The Mirror Steamed Over is a remarkable journey through a pivotal moment in contemporary culture.

*Shortlisted for the TAG Hungerford Manuscript Award 2018* *Shortlisted for the International Chaffinch Press Manuscript Award (Ireland)* Chilling to read, cut with powerful energy and strong feeling. T or Timothy lives on the economic margins, both using and selling methamphetamine in Mandurah. When a friend, Gulp, tragically dies and T grows close to Lori-Bird his life promises to become more centred. But he moves between loving and leaving her. This is a lyrical and arresting portrait of characters who crave love but struggle with addiction and the tenuous yet intimate community connections it gives them. The spirit of the Peel landscape informs both T’s identity and the lives of the people he encounters and offers a way out. Intimate with suffering and beauty, T is also at times transcendent. A contemporary novel with the urgency of what Davies’ Candy, Kerouac’s On the Road, and Garner’s Monkey Grip were to their own times. ‘Confronting and discomfiting, with small moments of redemption –T is very much a story for our times.’ – Kate Noske and Richard Rossiter (Hungerford Award Judges). ‘There is nothing else currently being written that is quite as exciting. Its blend of realism, grittiness, pared back lyricism and magical realism is unique and hasn’t been seen since the work of a powerful novelist of regional life like Tom Flood. T works the margins, both in terms of place and subject of the culture around meth use, in utterly compelling ways. This story needs to be told.’ – Lucy Dougan, Premier’s Award winner and Westerly editor.

She doesn’t even have time to scream… It’s Halloween when a young woman is reported missing from the small town of Black Rock Falls and Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner, Deputy David Kane, race to her remote home. Antique shop owner Jade Mackenzie went from mourning her mother's death to a whirlwind of mysteries, breakneck chases, and a cult of madmen trying to kill her…all while a gorgeous fireman made himself her personal bodyguard. Life got a whole lot more interesting when Aidan MacFie turned out to be a Selkie, hybrid human and ancient shapeshifting seal. Forged in life and death circumstances, their newfound love has weathered the first storm, but an even greater danger lurks on the horizon… Through his great-grandmother's diaries, Aidan learned of the Hunters' intent to destroy their people, believing Selkie were unholy, their hybrid offspring unnatural and evil. Just before Aidan and Jade escaped the cult leader after them, he spoke of a reaping in which the Hunters would at last wipe out the Selkies during their Great Birth, a 16-year event of multiple seal shapeshifter births that would take place in Scotland soon. Putting their budding romance on hold is agony, yet Aidan and Jade head to MacFie Castle in Tobermory, where his uncle lives, to follow the Hunters' trail. Only by untangling the threads of Celtic folklore, aquatic shapeshifters, and the shocking overlap of their own families' histories can they hope to save the Selkie Folk. But will they be too late to avoid the mass extinction of Aidan's people by fanatics who will stop at nothing to purge the world of what they consider a threat to all humanity? With peril around every corner, what hope do they have of sharing a happily ever after?
