Excerpt from The Manhood of the Master Neither is the book an attempted contribution to the the ology of the Church about Jesus. It is an endeavor, rather, to get back behind the thoughts of the centuries about him, and to see the Man Christ Jesus himself as he lives in the pages of the gospels. Such an attempt has its advantages and disadvantages. Many puzzling questions which concern the chronology of Jesus' life and the exact import of cer tain of his teachings, do not greatly trouble the student of his character. The broad outlines of his personality are clear and cannot be obscured by details of interpretation. Even deeper problems which concern the dates and composi tion of the gospels do not present a serious difficulty, for the fundamental qualities and attitudes of our Lord are to be traced in all the gospels, and this book has endeavored to conhue itself to these elemental matters. Excerpt from The Master of the Man Seen as something remote, strange and unnatural, this mighty life fails to teach the attainable for all men, or to inspire to the extent of human capacity; but if the life of one man is the life of all men, not in its incidentals, but in its essentials, then, in examination of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, interpretation of the incidental into the essen tial becomes of practical importance for practical ends. Such examination requires thought, rather than faith - no bad substitute where one's past, present and future are concerned, and value is placed upon life as a whole instead of upon a part; such interpretation makes the Nazarene a more tangible helper of men, one who companions them as they travel in the common road always opening before the newborn son of man, and with whom all may - nay, must, keep step. Excerpt from The Master Nor did he care how the people regarded him. He could sit, therefore, at the place of custom unmoved, inexorable, merciless. But on the morning of this day he was ex cited to a degree startling to those who saw him. And not without reason. Standing before him was a man, a raiser Of sheep, who held a scrap Of parchment in his hand on which some figures had been, written, these figures representing duties he was re quired to pay. He was taller than the average man, stockily built, robust, his appearance in every way suggesting vigorous, outdoor life. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... THE RELIGION OF A YOUNG MAN; WITH WORDS BY THE WAY TO OLDER MEN. The Master Builder, in Ibsen's famous play, confesses to an over-mastering fear; he fears the young. Some day he foresees that the new generation will come knocking at the door, and the event terrifies him There is very much the same sort of feeling among many people who esteem themselves the exponents and custodians of religion. Nothing occasions them so much dread as the working of the modern spirit. They cannot comprehend that " God fulfils Himself in many ways lest one good custom should corrupt the world." They do not confess their terror in the same way as the Master Builder does; but if their condition of mind were analyzed, it would be found identical with his: they fear the young. Now what is there in the religious demands of the young that is novel, or is there anything to occasion legitimate fear? To answer the second question first: no man who believes in the real progress of the race ought to fear the young. Lack of faith in the young is simply lack of faith in human progress. Whatever work the aged have initiated for their generation, it is for the new generation to fulfil. There is at once a pathetic and profound truth in the saying of St. Paul, when he closes his great list of Hebrew worthies who received not the promise, by declaring that they received it not because without us they could not be made perfect. They had to wait for us. All that they did was an instalment. They did their own work with an entire belief in its finality, as a mason might who works upon one section of a great cathedral, but who does not see what is going on in other sections, and does not know the full plan which he is helping to complete. In cathedral building generations pass, ...

Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... STUDY XII. The Measure of the Stature of the Fulness of Christ DAILY READINGS First Day, Twelfth Week Luke 7:6-9. And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Luke 23: 44-47. And it was now about the sixth hour, and a darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, the sun's light failing: and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst . And Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said this, he gave up the ghost. And when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying. Certainly this was a righteous man. We are going to note this week the impression which the Master made on very different kinds of people. The two centurions in these passages were attracted by his authoritative and powerful character, whether shown in his daily ministry or in the manner of his death. Recall also the soldiers, sent to arrest him, who returned, saying, "Never man spake like this man!" It is interesting to add the testimony of Napoleon, a man of the centurion type: "Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded great empires, but upon what...
