Excerpt from Information and Directions for Travellers on the Continent I will now close this preface by saying, that, in the h0pe of being serviceable to those of my compatriots, who, in consequence of pul monary complaints, are compelled to exchange their native climate for the mild temperature of Italy, I have ventured to make a few observations relative to health, and the result of twelve years expe ricuce; during the greater part of which period my time and thoughts were chiefly occupied by endeavours to mitigate the renderings of those most dear to me: and highly gratified should I feel if the little knowledge I have been able to collect could so far inform Travellers, as to guard them against those serious inconveniences which too generally retard, and not unfrequently prevent, the reco very of consumptive persons.
