Excerpt from The Louvre So bewildering is the Louvre, so overpowering by its size alone, even without the vast collections which are housed in it, that few visitors realise its charm as a building, its profoundly interesting story as a royal palace. The great picture gallery takes up all the attention of the Sightseer; the other collections are hardly appreciated at their proper value; the building and its history are alike neglected. Excerpt from The Louvre: Fifty Plates in Colour Those who wish to make a thorough, comprehensive, and systematic study of the pictures of the great national collection contained in the Louvre, which extend from the early years of the fourteenth century down to almost the present day, will be well advised to deal with the artists by the countries, schools, and periods to which they belong. That is the scheme which we have followed here. We do not hesitate to refer to painters, especially those of the Italian schools, under the names by which they are generally known to modern critics, as opposed to those under which they are officially catalogued by the Louvre authorities. Thus, Raphael, Titian, and Giulio Romano, and not Santi, Vecelli, and Fippi, are the names which we shall use in this book. Special attention is drawn to the fact that the official attributions of a certain number of the pictures, mainly of the Italian schools, and notably several by Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Titian, are not accepted by us. The authors of any critical book on a large national collection which includes several hundred Italian paintings of varying importance must of necessity be under heavy obligations to Mr. Berenson, whose scholarly, scientific, and constructive criticism, following on that of Morelli, has entirely revolutionised the study of Italian art. Excerpt from The Louvre, or Biography of a Museum: With Two Plans As the manuscript accumulated, however, it began to assume a character different from what had been at first intended. Instead of speaking of the Louvre at a distance, as it were, and arranging the materials that presented themselves in a purely chronological order, I found that I was led by the comparative 00piousness of my knowledge of one particular period - and the real relative importance of that period - to introduce, as it were, an under-plot, the hero of which was not a per sonified institution, but a real personage of flesh and blood, - my esteemed friend M. J eanron. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Paintings of the Louvre, Italian and Spanish The visitor who passes from the lower to the upper galleries of the Louvre might, with reason, be tempted to ask himself where the art of the intervening thousand years was to be found, and, on realizing that his search would be in vain, he might speculate as to the cause or causes which had conspired to make this so. How and why, he might ask himself, did that perfect art of Greece and its humble Roman imitation find no followers? How and why did they so vanish that art had to be born again and reappear in the form of almost childish attempts at expression a thousand years later? Excerpt from The Works of Theophile Gautier, Vol. 9: The Louvre The Museum of the Louvre, one of the very richest in Europe, was founded by the Convention, but fine collections Of paintings, drawings, and other works Of art existed in France long before that time. At that marvellous epoch called the Renaissance, Francis I, to whom the modern Louvre owes its existence, began to collect paintings and strove to found a school of artists inspired by Italian ideals. Andrea del Sarto was intrusted by him with large sums for the purchase Of masterpieces; del Sarto squandered the money, but Primaticcio, the next to be selected, fulfilled his com mission more honourably. Leonardo da Vinci, Peru gino, Raphael, Titian are now represented by works acquired by the knightly King. Catherine de' Medici and Cardinal Mazarin were both great collectors every one knows the clever way in which the latter managed to procure the Barberini Correggio. Louis XIV, whose love Of pomp somewhat narrowed his views on art, added many valuable works. It was his secretary, Colbert, who negotiated the purchase Of the famous Jabach collection. Versailles, Fontainebleau, the Tuileries, the Luxembourg, were full Of rare and precious works Of art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
