In 2005, I was asked to create a monthly comic strip for the magazine, "Massage Therapy Today", published by my professional association, Registered Massage Therapists' Association of Ontario (RMTAO). My comics were published there for many issues and were then posted in the association's e-news, "The Friday File". Then March 2020 rolled around and the COVID 19 pandemic struck. Fear and anxiety gripped everyone's hearts as we watched the death toll rise. Social distancing was imposed and our massage clinics, and other businesses, shut their doors for as long as it took to get a handle on this new virus. It's taken much longer than we thought. The RMTAO was still publishing "The Friday File" e-news and my "Adventures From Karen's Clinic" comic strip continued to be posted. Due to isolating at home, it transformed into "Adventures From Karen's Home". I've always been inspired by funny events that happened during a massage session or when other RMT's shared their experiences. Trust me, when I say that I was never short of ideas. You clients are hilarious! But wait, that's not all! Other cartoon ideas that didn't fit into the Adventure's format kept coming to me. I wanted to record amusing pandemic scenarios and the goofy ways we sometimes deal with stress. The results are the cartoons within these pages. This souvenir cartoon book chronicles the beginning of the pandemic through to the introduction of the vaccines. This isn't over yet, but hopefully we'll all be back to some kind of "better" normal sooner than later. I hope you enjoy reading these cartoons as much as I enjoyed drawing them.

A meditation on the infinite search for meanings in silence, from Wallis Wilde-Menozzi, the author of The Other Side of the Tiber and Mother Tongue. We need quiet to feel nothing, to hear silence that brings back proportion and the beauty of not knowing except for the outlines of what we live every day. Something inner settles. The right to silence unmediated by social judgment. Sitting at a table in an empty kitchen, peeling an apple, I wait for its next transformation. For a few seconds, the red, mottled, dangling skin unwinds what happened to it on earth. Wallis Wilde-Menozzi set out to touch silence for brief experiences of what is real. In images, dreams, and actions, the challenge leads to her heart as a writer. The pages of Silence and Silences form a vast tapestry of meanings shaped by many forces outside personal circumstance. Moving closer, the reader notices intricacies that shift when touched. As the writer steps aside, there is cosmic joy, biological truth, historical injustice. The reader finds women’s voices and women’s silences, sees Agnes Martin’s thin, fine lines and D. H. Lawrence’s artful letters, and becomes a part of Wilde-Menozzi’s examination of the ever-changing self. COVID-19 thrusts itself into the unbounded narrative, and isolation brings with it a new kind of stillness. As Wilde-Menozzi writes, “Reading a book is a way of withdrawing into silence. It is a way of seeing and listening, of pulling back from what is happening at that very moment.” The author has created a record of how we tell ourselves stories, how we think and how we know. Above all, she has made silence a presence as rich as time on the page and given readers space to discover what that means to a life.

ABOUT THE BOOK After reading the draft manuscript of this book, Rev. Mary Ramerman astutely observed, “When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, we were asked to observe social distance and stay home. Vacations, weddings, trips to the mall, dinners out, and baseball games all ended. We were literally sent to our rooms to reflect on how we lived our lives and what mattered most to us.” The collective wisdom presented in this anthology provides answers to those two important questions. Writers offer a wealth of ideas, shared wisdom, action steps, inspiring stories, and candid looks at real-life situations. The reader will find insights that come from the other side of pain, in people and events affirming hope, perseverance and resilience, as well as a candid record of life in the early days of this pandemic and the challenges before us.

In a clear and accessible style, Frank M. Snowden reveals the ways that diseases have not only influenced medical science and public health, but also transformed the arts, religion, intellectual history, and warfare. A multidisciplinary and comparative investigation of the medical and social history of the major epidemics, this volume touches on themes such as the evolution of medical therapy, plague literature, poverty, the environment, and mass hysteria. In addition to providing historical perspective on diseases such as smallpox, cholera, and tuberculosis, Snowden examines the fallout from recent epidemics such as HIV/AIDS, SARS, and Ebola and the question of the world’s preparedness for the next generation of diseases.

The many true-to-life situations in the book are based on Nevitt's experiences and observations over a 30-year period as a full-time yoga and meditation teacher. Aside from providing good laughs, Nevitt aims to gently poke those teachers and students who might have a tendency to take themselves and the practice of yoga a little too seriously. Yoga and mindfulness practitioners will smile knowingly as they recognize the all-too-familiar scenarios which Nevitt skewers throughout the book. So settle into your favorite yoga pose and let The Lighter Side of Yoga get your chakras spinning!
