This groundbreaking work studies the Arabic literary culture of early modern Southeast Asia on the basis of largely unstudied and unknown manuscripts. It offers new perspectives on intellectual interactions between the Middle East and Southeast Asia, the development of Islam and especially Sufism in the region, the relationship between the Arabic and Malay literary traditions, and the manuscript culture of the Indian Ocean world. It brings to light a large number of hitherto unknown texts produced at or for the courts of Southeast Asia, and examines the role of royal patronage in supporting Arabic literary production in Southeast Asia.

This book is the first detailed analysis of royal authority in the central Sumatran kingdom of Minangkabau between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries. It examines the language of kingship and the practice of royal signs in Sumatra. Authoritative works, it is argued, were a crucial source of empowerment to local communities in a period of change and external challenge.
This is an open access book. The 3rd Universitas Lampung International Conference on Social Sciences (ULICoSS) 2022 (ULICoSS) 2022 is an international conference organized by the Institute for Research and Community Services, Universitas Lampung, Indonesia. The event took place on 6th – 7th September 2022 in Bandar Lampung City, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This event will adopt a hybrid working model, combining an in-person event with an online meeting via Zoom. Attendees and presenters are expected to interact in this way, using technology to connect to global networks. As has been widely stated in the literature, a number of reports and papers have examined the pandemic’s negative effects, with the majority of work to date focusing on COVID-19’s negative impact on psychological well-being. Thus, social adjustment is required for resilience in order to adapt to and change in the face of adversity. In other words, it is clear that social adjustment, which includes the specific behaviors and abilities that people use to deal with daily problems and adapt to changing circumstances, is critical for global resilience today. As such, this international conference, which will feature five invited keynote speakers from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Indonesia, and Japan is intended to serve as a forum for the dissemination of specific alternative and significant breakthroughs in rapid social adjustments for global resilience, with an emphasis on global society, social welfare and development, and innovative communication, among other topics. Therefore, we invite scholars, academics, researchers, experts, practitioners, and university students to participate and share perspectives, experiences, and research findings by submitting papers on a variety of topics relevant to the conference’s theme and scope. All abstracts and papers submitted for consideration will undergo a double-blind peer review process to ensure their quality, relevance, and originality.
In The Representation of External Threats, Eberhard Crailsheim and María Dolores Elizalde present a collection of articles that trace the phenomenon of external threats in a multitude of settings across Asia, America, and Europe. The scope ranges from military threats against the Byzantine rulers of the 7th century to the perception of cultural and economic threats in the late 19th century Atlantic, and includes conceptual threats to the construction of national histories. Focussing on the different ways in which such threats were socially constructed, the articles offer a variety of perspectives and interdisciplinary methods to understand the development and representations of external threats, concentrating on the effect of 'threat communication' for societies and political actors. Admiral Cornelis Matelieff de Jonge was a Director in the Rotterdam chamber of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) for three decades in the early 17th century. In May 1605 he set sail from the Dutch Republic with a fleet of 11 ships, and in the following year launched an unsuccessful attack on Portuguese Melaka. After visiting various locations in the region and signing landmark treaties with the rulers of Johor (1606) and Ternate (1607), he returned to the Netherlands in 1608. There he wrote a series of epistolary reports and memoranda that were carefully studied by leading policy makers in the Republic, among them the renowned jurist Hugo Grotius, and the politician and diplomat Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. Early VOC policy for south-eastern Asia drew heavily on Matelieff's submissions, and the materials reproduced in this volume provide candid insights into key elements of VOC strategy, trade, security and regional diplomacy, as well as Dutch relations with Spain and Portugal. Here translated into English for the first time, this collection of Matelieff's writings is an invaluable resource for students of business history, early colonial history, and the history of international law.

Jakarta is a fascinating city. It's attraction lies in the incredibly wide variety of people - Indonesians, Chinese, Indians, Arabs and Europeans - who have arrived over the centuries, bringing with them their own habits, folklore and culture.
