Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure novels set mostly in Africa, and a founder of the Lost World literary genre. The Lady of Blossholme is a tale of adventure set in the time of King Henry VIII. This was the period when King Henry was rebelling against Pope Clement VII, and when many Englishmen in the north, and many clergymen, were rebelling against Henry, in the so-called Pilgrimage of Grace. To raise needed funds for this rebellion against the king, the Spanish abbot Clement Maldon murders Cicely Foterell’s father and tries to claim all the family’s lands and jewels. And Dr. Therne is a confessional story from a mad scientist obsessed with one of the great issues of his day – vaccination against epidemic diseases like smallpox. His personal fears meet the tragic legacy of other doctors' careless ignorance and spawn a malignant crusade against vaccination.

Sir Thomas Colford and I, with our little knots of agents and sub- agents, placed ourselves one on each side of the table, waiting in respectful silence while the clerk dealt out the papers, as a player deals out cards. It was an anxious moment, as any one who has gone through a closely-contested parliamentary election can testify. For ten days or more the strain had been great, but, curiously enough, now at its climax it seemed to have lost its grip of me. I watched the denoument of the game with keenness and interest indeed, but as though I were not immediately and personally concerned.

An eccentric collector, pottering around a houseful of crumbling antiques, spots a hoary old chest -- and when he asks after it he's told it's not for sale . . . until, suddenly, it is. Buried in that wreck of a chest are the last relics of Hubert of Hastings, including his autobiography, telling of his long-ago deeds, including his journey to America and his conquering of Peru.
