Excerpt from Handbook to the Labour Laws of New Zealand The maj ority of the important statutes which have been grouped together as The Labour Laws had their origin in the policy of advanced legislation that has attracted attention to New Zealand of late years. They reveal themselves as the efiect of a great popular efiort to reform and improve the conditions of industrial life In regard to one or two of the Acts which still endure hostile criticism, the censure that at present exists is directed wre towards details or methods than in attack on the principle underlying the enactment. Excerpt from State Regulation of Labour and Labour, Disputes in New Zealand: A Description and a Criticism Great care has been exercised in the preparation of the work, which was begun nearly two years ago. Since then a number of important decisions have been given, and these have had to be incorporated in the various chapters from time to time. Only a few months ago the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act Amendment Bill, by which drastic alterations in the Act are proposed, was introduced into Parliament by the Minister for Labour, and a summary of this measure has been given as an Appendix. The work is, therefore, in every respect quite up-to-date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from New Zealand Department of Labour: Its Organization and Work Registrar of Industrial Unions, was placed in charge. Two months afterwards he was joined by Mr. James Mackay, now Chief Inspector of Factories and Deputy Registrar. The Department was instituted by the late Hon. John Ballance, then Premier of New Zealand, for the purpose of trying to meet the unem ployed difficulty, which was at that time in pressing existence in all the larger towns. The attempt was made to bring the work and the worker together, by appointing agents all over the colony, who should not only continually report on the labour condition of their districts, but give active assistance by forwarding workers on their way to employ ment. Cc-operative works on roads and railways were also started by the Government to absorb the overplus of labour not required by private employers.
