"Innovation and entrepreneurship are ubiquitous today, both as fields of study and as starting points for conversations among experts in government and economic development. But while these areas on continue to attract public and private investments, many measurements of their resulting economic growth-including productivity growth and business dynamism-have remained modest. Why this difference? Because not all business sectors are the same, and the transformative gains of some industries have been offset by stagnation or contraction in others. Accordingly, a nuanced understanding of the economy requires a nuanced understanding of where innovation and entrepreneurship occur and where they matter. Answering these questions allows for strategic public investment and the infrastructure for economic growth. The Role of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Economic Growth, the latest entry in the NBER conference series, seeks to codify these answers. The editors leverage industry studies to identify specific examples of productivity improvements enabled by innovation and entrepreneurship, including those from new production technologies, increased competition, new organizational forms, and other means. Taken together, the volume illuminates whether the contribution of innovation and entrepreneurship to economic growth is likely to be concentrated, be it selected sectors or more broadly"--

Innovation and technology are increasingly at the heart of economic growth around the world and will be crucial tools for addressing emerging issues such as global urbanization and growing demand for food, energy, and water. In this report, CSIS and RTI International assess the challenges and opportunities facing developing countries as they pursue innovation and technology-driven economic growth. The report includes analysis of three different subtopics—education and human capital development, translational research and development and commercialization, and the innovation policy environment—as well as case studies from Kenya, Malaysia, and India. From this research collaboration, CSIS and RTI International hope to create a platform for engaging a broad set of actors to support the creation of knowledge-based economies and innovation-led economic growth.

One of the world’s most prevalent political quarrels is the current geographical state of Ukraine, along with its relationships with Russia and the European Union. With the annexation of Crimea, Russian forces have gained control over most of Eastern Ukraine, igniting a clash between the two governments and triggering the European Union, United States, and several Post-Soviet states to involve themselves in the situation. As these engagements continue to unfold, significant research is needed to examine the current state of these administrations and the tensions that continue to intensify in this region of the world. Analyzing Political Tensions Between Ukraine, Russia, and the EU is a collection of innovative research on the recent developments inside this growing geopolitical conflict. While highlighting topics including neighborhood policy, NATO relations, and Eastern partnership, this book is ideally designed for politicians, policymakers, governmental strategists, researchers, educators, journalists, academicians, and students seeking further understanding of foreign relations and the current political struggles of these European territories.

Everybody agrees that innovation is important to our nation's economic growth and future prosperity, but what can the government do to promote it? The consensus of four years ago focused on remedying our perceived competitive shortcomings in science education and research, especially in the physical sciences. Today, the question takes on new urgency with the recognition that much of the economic growth experienced over the past decade was illusory. For the long term, we need to take a closer look at the institutions that enable innovation, not only to see how they can be better coordinated but also how they can respond to the evolving forms and practice of innovation. This kind of adaptive intelligence has not been a strong point of the federal government, but it is essential to long-term economic growth and security. It will require infusing competence, innovation, and entrepreneurship into the government. Yet it also means recognizing that the capacity and role of government is limited, and that the functions of government are subject to high standards of transparency, accountability, and participation.A national commitment to innovation requires not only remediation but exploiting our strengths and enhancing the fabric of innovation, especially in the social, commercial, and institutional applications of technology. Innovation policy as practiced to date tends to take a top-down macroeconomic approach that views public research funding and tax credits as the primary policy tools. Those are important tools, but they are limited (and costly) and get caught up political processes that have become all too familiar.Important as they are, they should not distract from a closer appreciation and understanding of the processes of innovation -- processes that can be improved by a focused and coordinated approach to standards, infrastructure, enabling technology, clusters, and patents, an approach that takes into account evolving practices and models in the many contexts in which innovation takes place.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.7, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to investigate whether entrepreneurship is an adequate tool for developing countries to propel economic growth and bring forth economic development. The theory of economic growth and development demonstrates that productive entrepreneurship is important to increase productivity and foster structural economic transformation if a sufficient institutional framework is in place. Empirical evidence examining the effect of entrepreneurship on economic growth and development is difficult to establish and yields ambiguous results. It is revealed that developing countries fail to generate growth and development from their high rates of entrepreneurial activity. Only employment creating “high-growth entrepreneurship” is identified to positively influence economic growth. It is shown that enhancements of institutions and well-targeted policies could help developing countries to generate more growth-oriented entrepreneurship.

The need for informed and effective insights into key concepts and models of regional development and growth, from an endogenous growth perspective, has risen over the past decade. These recent advances address in particular local and regional assets and characteristics comprising inter alia creativity, knowledge, innovation forces and entrepreneurship. Access to and exploitation of these modern forms of human and social capital are of paramount importance for the dynamic regional economic environment in a city or region. This volume offers an overview and critical treatment of the spatial-economic roots, opportunities and impacts of new growth strategies, mainly from an evidence-based perspective. In the various contributions to this volume, relevant findings and strategic options are interpreted and discussed from both an analytical and a policy perspective to help cultivate creativity, human capital development and innovation as well as entrepreneurial activity, with a view to exploit the drivers of economic development, in order to strengthen the competitive edge of cities and regions.
