In this book, based on the 1995 Ohlin Lectures, Deepak Lal provides an accessible, interdisciplinary account of the role of culture in shaping economic performance. Topics addressed include a possible future "clash of civilizations," the role of Asian values in the East Asian economic miracle, the cultural versus economic causes of social decay in the West, and whether modernization leads to Westernization. Lal makes an important distinction between material and cosmological beliefs, showing how both were initially shaped by factor endowments and how they have evolved in response to changing historical pressures in different civilizations. Lal's first major theme is the interaction of factor endowments, culture, and politics in explaining modern intensive growth in the West. The other major theme is the role of individualism--an inadvertent legacy of the medieval Catholic Church--in promoting this growth, and the strange metamorphoses this has caused in both the West's cosmological beliefs and the interaction between "the West and the rest." Lal takes account of the relevant literature in history, anthropology, social psychology, evolutionary biology, neurology, and sociology, and the economic history of the regions and cultures that form Eurasia. An appendix shows how the stories Lal tells can be described by four formal economic models.

This is Volume XV of a series of thirty-two on Developmental Psychology. Originally published in 1936, this study looks at when speech begins in children. The sounds that a child makes during his first few months are so elusive and apparently so remote from anything that might be called language that any observer however interested in speech might well be pardoned for waiting until the noises become, at any rate, a little more obviously human. To persist in making observations one must be interested in the variety of human sounds merely as sounds, one must have faith in the continuity of growth, and in addition, perhaps, one must have something of that insensitiveness to ridicule which is found at its highest in the truly devoted parent.
In this book a quantitative, dynamic model is developed to explain and explore the diffusion of green new products in a business-to-business (B2B) context. Considering the case of emerging bioplastics, this goal is reached through a mixed-methods design, combining qualitative and quantitative methods over three phases. After an interview study with key-value chain actors an experimental vignette technique is applied to further study relevant factors in the micro (firm) level adoption process. Integrating the empirical findings, the diffusion model is developed and simulated at the macro (industry) level using a System Dynamics (SD) approach. Results explain the underlying dynamics and critical conditions for adoption to become self-sustaining.
