Excerpt from The History of the Seal of the United States The committee to design the arms of the new nation had no national precedent to follow, for the arms of a kingdom are nearly always those of the sovereign or his family, and the new Republic could accept no individual's arms. The several colonies, however, each had a seal, and these, as they were generally significant and simple, would have been a fair guide to the exigencies Of a national seal. The members Of the committee, however, had an idea that an allegorical picture significant Of the fortunes and destiny of the United States would be more appropriate; but as none of them could draw they called into consul tation Eugene Pierre Du Simitiere, a West Indian Frenchman who lived in Philadelphia and had a reputation as an artist and author. John Adams, It so appears attached to the exchange copy of the treaty of peace with the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Seal of History, Vol. 2: Our Inheritance in the Great Seal of "Manasseh," the United States of America; Its History and Heraldry; And Its Signification Unto "the Great People" Thus Sealed The Great Seal of the United States of America is as consummate a piece of Armorie as any blazonry that has ever been displayed among the nations. All Of its elements are homogeneous and, when conceived and realized correctly, their natural harmony is quite above any adverse criticism, whether it be taken from an artistic or an heraldic point of View. In the mean time, its perfect balance and comprehensive symbol ogy are so natural as to unite the exoteric and eso teric things involved into a perfect concert of Signifi cance adapted to all degrees of appreciation. As a matter of fact, it is such a compendium of truth, and so inexhaustible a teacher along all fundamental lines, that to some extent it is always understood at sight. We merely anticipate the assent of our readers to these averments, and furthermore, are satisfied that they will rise from the investigation to which we now invite their attention as fully convinced as we our selves are that t/zis Instrument Which we have imber ited from our ancestors is quite as remarkable from every point of View as if it actually purported to have come to us through direct Revelation unto them. Excerpt from History of the Seal and Flag of the State of New Hampshire The history of the seal of New Hampshire must necessarily begin with the first establishment of a separate government for the Province, and the assumption of administration by President John Cutt Jan. 1, From the first settlement in 1623 to 1641, during which time only four towns developed into existence, these towns failed to unite in a common govern ment. For many years the inhabitants were so few that an established form of government was not one of the necessities of a safe and orderly life. But with a steady increase in population the need of a code of laws and regulations and a recognized control ling power became manifest. As this necessity did not appear in all the towns at the same time, each dealt with its own affairs as circumstances seemed to require. The grant of New Hampshire to Capt. John Mason was not a charter, and did not convey any power of political government. Tuttle says, in his volume of Historical Papers, 1889, but the grant of so much power as should be necessary to protect his own rights and the rights of his servants, as well as to preserve order, must be understood as implied in the concession made to him. In theabsence of any general government, even of the simplest sort, the several communities or clusters of inhabitants in New Hampshire found themselves compelled at an early period to combine for self protection.
