Excerpt from The History of Portrait Miniatures, Vol. 1 Much original research has been necessary in the work, especially with regard to the English painters who in Stuart times worked in Scandinavia, and the Continental artists who have hitherto been generally neglected. The author has had access to State documents in many parts of Europe, some hitherto closed to inquirers, while bundles of letters, various note-books, catalogues, and privately printed volumes relating to families and pictures have been placed at his disposal for purposes of study. In the chapters dealing with Alexander Cooper, the exhibitors at the Royal Academy, the painters in enamel, and the foreign artists, it will be found especially that new ground has been broken. It should be mentioned that the discovery narrated in Chapter XIX., which entirely disproves a theory hitherto accepted, was not made until Vol. I. Had been printed. The illustrations have been taken from collections in all parts of the world and represent almost every important miniature painter by some characteristic example of his work. As far as possible signed examples have been selected as well as interesting portraits of important personages. Each miniature has been specially photographed for the purpose, and is reproduced full size in order that the student may have before him a truthful representation of the painting, great care having been taken to select works of definite authenticity. It is with respect to the loan of miniatures and the permission to have them reproduced that the author has to express so deep a debt of gratitude to owners and collectors. Excerpt from How to Identify Portrait Miniatures It has been suggested to me that many persons unable to acquire my larger "History of Portrait Miniatures," would be glad to have a small work giving such assistance to the collector of miniatures as is needed, with respect especially to signatures, dates, colouring, and other means of identification. Hence the issue of this handbook, which it is hoped will be of service to the industrious collector. The opportunity has been utilized to incorporate a few extra facts that have come to my knowledge since the issue of my larger work, and to give illustrations of certain miniatures recently sold. In view of the revival of the art of miniature painting, it has also seemed a fitting opportunity to add some chapters dealing with the practical side of the art, and these chapters I have prevailed upon my friend Mr. Alyn Williams to write, considering that as the leading miniature painter of the day he was better qualified than any other person to give the instruction required. Excerpt from The Miniature Collector: A Guide for the Amateur, Collector of Portrait Miniatures In the Bibliography, I have adopted a somewhat different plan from that I have used in other books, and have given some information as to the importance, or contents, of the books in question, to guide any future purchasers. Above all, it has been my desire, in accordance with the wish of' the editor of this series, to make the book one of practical value, to give the information in simple language, avoiding as far as possible, technicalities, or the jargon of a collector, and thus to produce a work which will be useful, I venture to hope, to the person commencing to collect, and will yet not be scorned by those who already own a collee tion, and desire to know more about the artists who were responsible for their treasures. Study the dynamic art of portrait miniatures in Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors by art historian George Williamson, which surveys the works of the artists who made portrait miniatures. Williamson explains that the practice of portrait miniature originated in manuscript illustration, and may also be an outgrowth of treaties and maps, which often attached portraits of ambassadors for verification. "Miniature" in this context refers to the fact that the paintings were actually portable. The book begins with a 40-page essay and is followed by dozens of reproductions of the paintings discussed within the text. Williamson identifies Hans Holbein as the greatest painter of portrait miniatures and he presents several examples of Holbein's art, explaining what it is that makes the examples 'masterworks'. One of the portraits pictured in the book was on loan from J.P. Morgan's private collection and many of the portraits reproduced for the book were leant by their famous collectors. Englishmen Samuel Cooper is considered the greatest English practitioner of portrait miniatures. Little is known about Cooper's life even to this day, and Williamson connects the dots that are known about his life supported by evidence from the paintings. In the 18th Century, painters like Richard Cosway refined the techniques of Holbein, Cooper and others. Williamson helpfully notes that painters of the era were under different conditions than their predecessors. The public wanted paintings done faster and lighter, and with more charming and sensitive tones, and the reproductions attempt to illustrate this change in portrait miniatures. Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors concludes with Sir William Ross, who many consider the last of the great miniature portrait artists. Although the art may have gradually died out, the examples cited in this book are inspirational and the art lives on in collections and museums around the world. Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors was written for collectors, but anyone interested in art will enjoy the essay and paintings.
