With more than 1,700 words, terms, and phrases, this dictionary is the most comprehensive compilation of terminology used by lawyers, attorneys, legal assistants, and other professionals in the legal services and law enforcement in the United States. Whether one works as a prosecutor, defense attorney or in other aspects of the legal and law profession, the correct use of Spanish-language words, phrases, and terms is vital. This is the vocabulary of success in business. Learn these words and phrases. Practice using these words and phrases. In short order they will become part of your vocabulary, and others will see that you are fluent in legal and law Spanish and can speak with the assurance that conveys leadership and success. From "altercation" (disputa) to "voidable contract" (contrato anuable), from "motion for a new trial" (peticion para un nuevo juicio) to "petitioner" (demandante), from "injunction" (prohibicion judicial) to "failure to appear" (incumplimiento de comparacer), communicating with Spanish-dominant clients and colleagues is now a breeze. This book is primarily intended for U.S.-born Latinos who are English-dominant. It is also a useful refresher for non-Hispanic Americans who learned Spanish in school, or who want to refresh their legal Spanish vocabulary and usage. This dictionary is as indispensable as a computer password.

This book is a multidisciplinary analysis of the meaning and dynamics of multilingualism from the perspectives of multilingual societies and language communities in the margins, who are trapped in a vicious circle of disadvantage. It analyses the social, psychological and sociolinguistic processes of linguistic dominance and hierarchical relationships among languages, discrimination, marginalisation and assertive maintenance in multilingualism characterised by a Double Divide, and shows the relationship between educational neglect of languages, capability deprivation and poverty, and loss of linguistic diversity. Its comparative analysis of language-in-education policies and practices and applications of multilingual education (MLE) in diverse contexts shows some promises and challenges in the education of indigenous/tribal/minority children. This book will be of interest to students, researchers, educators and practitioners in sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, psycholinguistics, multilingualism and bilingual/multilingual education.

Locality in WH Quantification argues that Logical Form, the level that mediates between syntax and semantics, is derived from S-structure by strictly local movement. The primary data for the claim of locality at LF is drawn from Hindi but English data is used in discussing the semantics of questions and relative clauses. The book takes a cross-linguistic perspective showing how the Hindi and English facts can be brought to bear on the theory of universal grammar. There are several phenomena generally thought to involve long-distance dependencies at LF, such as scope marking, long-distance list answers and correlatives. In this book they are handled by explicating novel types of local relationships that interrogative and relative clauses can enter. Amore articulated semantics is shown leading to a simpler syntax. Among other issues addressed is the switch from uniqueness/maximality effects in single WH constructions to list readings in multiple WH constructions. These effects are captured by adapting the treatment of WH expressions as quantifying over functions to the cases of multiple WH questions and correlatives. List readings due to functional dependencies are systematically distinguished from those that are based on plurality.

The principal emphasis is on syntax and morphology of which there exists no comprehensive account. Phonology and lexicon are treated briefly and there is a chapter on the script.

"It is the first thorough semiological analysis of historical discourse, and it is the most original contribution to historiographical theory since Paul Ricoeur's "Time and Narrative." Moreover, its implications extend far beyond the confines of historical studies. Literary critics and theorists and social scientists as well will have to come to terms with the uncomfortable truths revealed in this book. A brilliant achievement."--Hayden White, University of California, Santa Cruz "This book forces one to come to terms with its provocative claims and to seek a better formulation of the nature and value of historical inquiry."--Dominick Lacapra, "American Historical Review" "No historian who reads and comprehends this book will write in the same way again. . . "Historical Culture" has the potential of becoming the major historiographical work of this decade."--Mark Poster, University of California, Irvine
