DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Harp on the Willows Now, dear friends, to be as honest as yourselves, I have great fear that you do not understand the case, and some fear that you will not study it. If the vval denses were about to be ejected from those valleys, which they hold by solemn treaty, I could count on your interference. Or if the civil courts of Constanti nople were tampering with the internal arrangements of our Ambassador's chapel, I believe that you would think it right that our Government should remonstrate. Now that the Queen of Madagascar is concussing Christian consciences, I know that many of you are indignant, and would interpose your protection if you could. If you will hear me patiently, I promise to show that the cases are too' parallel; and as I shall endeavour to relieve the subject of all intricate details and metaphysical niceties, so I earnestly trust that, if I make out a case of grievance or of suffering for con science' sake, you who have are now listened to a voice from Piedmont, will not shut your ears against a voice from the Church of Scotland.
