In September 2021, the WHO Global Tuberculosis (TB) Programme convened an online expert consultation on the classification of intrathoracic tuberculosis (TB) disease in children. The consultation was attended by representatives from countries, bilateral and multilateral agencies, international organizations, nongovernment organizations, civil society and academia. The goal of the consultation was to reach consensus on the classification of intrathoracic TB disease and specifically intrathoracic lymph node TB disease in children aged below ten years as either pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB, for global application in clinical settings and for surveillance purposes. This meeting report summarizes the presentations, discussions and final advice provided by meeting participants at this expert consultation meeting. The target audience for this report is all those involved in the meeting, as well as a wider audience of clinicians, paediatricians, Ministry of Health staff, TB surveillance experts, technical experts and others who are interested in the classification of TB disease in children. The advice provided is informing the development of normative products by WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Programme.

The World Health Organization, through its Global Tuberculosis (TB) Programme, leads and guides the global effort to end the TB epidemic through universal access to people-centred prevention and care, multisectoral action and innovation. Each year, since 1997, the WHO Global TB Report provides a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic, and of the progress in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease, at global, regional and country levels. This is done in the context of global TB commitments, strategies and targets. The 2021 edition of the report has been produced in a new and more web-centric format. This is designed to make the content available in smaller (more “bite-sized”) chunks that are easier to read, digest, navigate and use. The short and slim report PDF, with 30 pages of main content and six short annexes, is accompanied by expanded and more detailed digital content on web pages. This document is a compilation of these web pages and should be read in conjunction with the main report.
