India’s sustained and rapid economic growth offers an opportunity to lift millions out of poverty. But this may come at a steep cost to its environment and natural resources. This insightful book analyses India’s growth from an economic perspective and assesses whether India can grow in a "green" and sustainable manner. Three key issues are addressed. The first is the physical and monetary costs and losses of environmental health and natural resources driven by economic growth. The authors undertake a monetary valuation and quantification of environmental damage, using techniques that have been developed to better understand and quantify preferences and values of individuals and communities in the context of environmental quality, conservation of natural resources, and environmental health risks. The second part estimates the value of ecosystem services from the major biomes in India using state-of-the art methods with a view to preserving them for the future. The third section provides a menu of policy instruments to explore trade-offs between economic growth and environmental sustainability using a Computable General Equilibrium approach with particular attention to air pollution. The conclusions focus on the way forward in terms of policies, measures and instruments as India has to balance the twin challenges of maintaining economic prosperity while managing its environmental resources.
This assessment presents a science-based analysis of the current and potential capabilities of the UK's forests and forest products to contribute to the mitigation of climate change. It shows unequivocally that: (1) a significant contribution to mitigation could be made by maintaining and increasing the rates at which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by the UK's forests - the abatement of emissions; (2) there are other major contributions that forests and trees can make, for example in urban environments, and (3) that there are areas where substantial research is required to assess and reduce impacts and to develop the contribution of UK forestry to the mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change. The report follows the IPCC convention of identifying key findings at the start of each chapter. Authors have also identified research priorities at the end of their respective chapters and these proposals require serious and urgent consideration. Gaps in understanding are identified and, in some instances, there is a clear requirement for more scientific evidence in order that uncertainties in the projected impacts of climate change can be reduced. The driver in the new research programmes will be the need to enhance the contribution that UK trees and woodlands can make to a low carbon economy. It is the expressed intention of the report to provide the detailed evidence required to achieve sustainable forest management under what will be complex and changing climatic circumstances.

The Montreal Process was formed to advance the development of internationally agreed-upon criteria & indicators for sustainable forest management. The Canadian commitment to this process is demonstrated by the development of a domestic set of seven criteria & indicators, six of this relate to forest conditions, attributes, functions, or benefits. The seventh relates to the overall policy framework that can facilitate sustainable forest management and support efforts to conserve, maintain, or enhance the conditions, attributes, and benefits captured in the first six criteria. This report begins with an introduction describing forest ecosystems and forest management in Canada, explaining the area of forest covered by the report, and indentifying Canada-specific forest management characteristics to help place the criteria & indicators framework in context. The main section contains reports on the criteria, each with an introduction and reports on the corresponding indicators (what is being measured, indicator data or factual description, information sources). The final section contains a summary of all the criteria as well as an overview of Canada's ability to report on them and plans to enhance reporting capability in the future. Includes glossary.
