Opening in February 1947 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, the school served the needs of returning GIs and others in need of employment training. City Tech trained United States Air Force personnel in its employment-oriented programs, including the first college-based program in the country in restorative dentistry. City Tech became the first public community college in New York, and in 1981, it became the senior college of technology of The City University of New York. Today City Tech is the largest public college of technology in the Northeast and the most diverse. New York City College of Technology highlights the history of this vibrant institution that has continually served the needs of both its students and its city.

The point of departure is a view of changing academic realities, through which the identity as a technical university is challenged and reconstituted. More specifically, the book connects the development of technical universities to changes in the structure and dimensioning of national higher education systems, to changes in the disciplinary basis of academic research and to changes in the governance of higher education institutions. Introduced in the age of industrialization, polytechnical schools rose to prominence in many national settings during the second half of the 19th century. Over time, new technologies have been developed and incorporated into the repertoire, and waves of academisation have swept over the former polytechnics, transforming them into technical universities. Their traditions and brands, however, prevail. Several technical universities are included among the most prestigious academic institutions of their nations and the training of engineers and engineering research still enjoys a high level of prestige and national priority, e.g. in the context of innovation and industrial policy. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe purpose of this study was to explore factors leading to the founding of the Virginia Technical College System (VTCS). These factors are observed primarily within the timeframe of 1954-1966. The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) evolved from the Technical College System, and began in 1964. Classes started at the first technical colleges in September 1965. Despite the writings of two previous histories concerning the founding of the VCCS, one in 1977 and another in 1987, the events that led to the creation of the technical college system have never been documented, nor have the linkages between the technical college system and the Virginias business and industry community been investigated. Pointedly, the influence of the series of events, beginning with the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 and the subsequent Massive Resistance movement in Virginia, created a particular climate for the founding of the Department of Technical Education 10 years later. The research questions at the heart of this study sought to understand better the social, political, and economic circumstances under which the colleges were formed. This research used oral history methods and documentary research methods to create a historiographic overview of the founding of the VTCS. This research determined that the contested environment of Massive Resistance contributed to the founding of the VTCS.
