DOWNLOAD EBOOKCells bristle with a battery of surface enzymes, of which the peptidases form the largest and best studied group. These ectopeptidases play crucial roles in many diverse biological functions, including the termination of peptide signals in the nervous system and at peripheral sites. Some of their key physiological roles, such as those of angiotensin- and endothelin-converting enzymes in generating vasoconstrictive agents and endopeptidase-24.11 in activating natriuretic peptides, enkephalins and tachykinins, have made them prime targets for the pharmaceutical industry. Interest among immunologists and haematologists was aroused when several were shown to be identical to cell-surface markers (CD antigens) on human leukocytes. Virologists have been excited to find that some double as receptors for certain viruses.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKOf the many special roles played by proteolytic enzymes in immune reactions, this book addresses different aspects of membrane peptidases, signal transduction via ligation of membrane peptidases (especially of dipeptidyl peptidase IV/CD26 and aminopeptidase N/CD13), and regulation of membrane peptidases in vivo and in vitro. A number of newly discovered peptidases (including cathepsin F, W and X, carboxypeptidase X, attractin) are described, with special emphasis given to the role of peptidases in immune and defense reactions and in the pathogenesis of inflammatory and other diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, pancreatitis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and tumours of various origins. The focus on the involvement of a selection of proteolytic enzymes in immune reactions and diseases is a unique feature of this multifaceted work , which combines biochemical, immunological and clinical research reports with literary reviews of the field.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book will give an overview on viruses undergoing proteolytic activation through host proteases. The chapters will be organized in three themed parts, the first part describing respective viruses and their characteristics in detail. In the second part the molecular and cellular biology of the proteases involved as well as their physiological functions will be further explored. The third part will contain a chapter on protease inhibitors that are promising tools for antiviral therapy. This book will engage scholars in virology and medical microbiology as well as researchers with an interest in enzymology and protein structure and function relationship.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKClassical histology has been augmented by immunohistochemistry (the use of specific antibodies to stain particular molecular species in situ). Immunohistochemistry has allowed the identification of many more cell types than could be visualized by classical histology, particularly in the immune system and among the scattered hormone-secreting cells of the endocrine system. This book discusses all aspects of immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization technologies and the important role they play in reaching a cancer diagnosis. It provides step-by-step instructions on the methods of additional molecular technologies such as DNA microarrays, and microdissection, along with the benefits and limitations of each method.* The only book available that translates molecular genetics into cancer diagnosis * Methods were developed by internationally-recognized experts and presented in step-by-step manner * Results of each Immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization are presented in the form of color illustrations

DOWNLOAD EBOOKNeuropeptides and peptide hormones represent the largest class of chemical messengers that transmit information from one cell to another. In this review, several decades of research on peptides in cell-cell signaling are summarized, with a focus on neuropeptide discovery, biosynthesis, and function. In addition to covering the well-studied aspects of neuropeptides, emerging concepts are discussed, including classical versus non-classical neuropeptides and direct versus indirect neuropeptides. Other potential functions for peptides in intercellular and intracellular signaling are also discussed. Table of Contents: Overview of Neuropeptides / Neuropeptide Discovery / Neuropeptide Biosynthesis / Neuropeptides After Secretion: Receptors and Peptidases / Representative Neuropeptides / Concluding Remarks and Future Directions / References / Author Biography
