Excerpt from The Essentials of Elementary Chemistry and Chemical Physics, for the Assistance of High School Students and Intermediate Candidates The raise a' 'etre of this little book is as follows The compiler has, during some years, been obliged, for lack of a suitable handbook, to give to his large classes in Chemistry copious explanatory notes and definitions. This practice has at length become such a serious task that, in self-defence, he has sought re lief by resorting to publication. Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry A course in elementary chemistry suitable for the average high-school student should give a description of the common elements, their compounds, and their reactions, sufficiently clear and full to enable him to form correct conceptions of the nature of the changes that are going on around him. But it should do more; as far as is possible in an elementary course, it should provide him with a thorough groundwork in the simpler laws and theories of modern chemistry. This gives meaning and coherence to what would otherwise be fragments of knowledge, and lays a solid foundation for the continuation of the study of chemistry. The descriptive matter should impose as little strain as possible on the student's memory. To accomplish this the facts should be properly coordinated with one another and duly correlated with the experiences of everyday life. General points of view should be emphasized and isolated details suppressed. Important historical items should be mentioned, for they put life into the subject and give it perspective. The laws of chemistry should be introduced in immediate connection with the discussion of those substances which first present typical applications of each law. The treatment of the laws should be full and varied. Reference to them should be made frequently throughout the course, so that they may become a permanent working possession of the student. The modern theories of physical chemistry should receive the attention their importance demands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry The energy aspect of chemistry should not be entirely neglected. Elementary notions of thermo chemistry illustrated by simple reactions should be dwelt upon here and there in the course. Theories should not be considered until after the student has acquired some knowledge of the facts and laws of chemistry. Their presentation should be such as not to fail to give correct notions of their real value and their relation to facts and laws. Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage This book is the second of three little volumes containing a course of experimental work on the elementary principles of Physics and Chemistry. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes ought to be possessed by everyone. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things: for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Unfortunately, it is not often possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. When circumstances permit, every pupil should perform the experiments, and when this is impossible he should see them done by someone else. Excerpt from Essentials of Chemistry The Revised Edition of the Essentials of Chemis try retains the scientific character of the original text, but the method of treatment and the order of topics have been modified in accordance with the experience of the past ten years. These years have brought about significant changes in the Chemistry courses of secondary schools. Not only has the number of students increased greatly, but chemical science has become more and more important as a prerequisite for work in the other sciences and in applied courses. In View of this increased and altered demand for chemical instruction, authors are tempted to neglect the basic principles of the science, and to enlarge upon the purely descriptive matter. But Chemistry that is merely descriptive is not an ade quate preparation even for applied courses. What is sought of Chemistry, both by those who study it as a prerequisite for other work, and by those whose sole aim is general culture, is, essentially, the chemi cal point of view. To present that point of view properly, a text-book must include a correct, even if simple, treatment of chemical theory. Especially.
