Excerpt from A d104-Book Embryology for Students of Medicine The facts of embryology having acquired in recent years such great interest in connection with the teaching and with the proper comprehension of human anatomy, it is of first importance to the student of medicine that a concise and yet sufficiently full text-book upon the subject be available. It was with the aim of presenting such a book that this volume was written, the author, in his experience as a teacher of anatomy, having been impressed with the fact that students were seriously handicapped in their study of the subject of embryology by the lack of a text-book full enough to be intelligible, and yet without that minuteness of\detail which characterizes the larger treatises, and which so often serves only to confuse and discourage the beginner. In the arrangement of the subject-matter of the book, it has been the aim not only to present a connected story of human development, but also to make each chapter as nearly as possible complete in itself, for the sake of convenience of reference. It is for this reason that some repetitions occur in the text. The frequent allusions to certain facts of com parative embryology are rendered necessary by the very nature of the subject, but it has been the writer's aim to make these allusions as simple and as easily intelligible as possible. Excerpt from Text-Book of the Embryology of Man and Mammals The history of the development of the individual, or Ontogeny (embryology), is the science of the growth of an organism 5 it de scribes the morphological changes which an organism passes through from its origin in the ovum up to its complete maturity, and presents these in their natural connection. We can regard the fertilisation of the egg-cell as the beginning of the process of development for Vertebrates, as it also is for all the rest of the higher animals. In giving an account of the changes of the egg-cell, which begin with fertilisation, one may choose between two different methods. According to one method a particular organism is made the basis of the account, and one describes the changes which its germ under goes from the moment of fertilisation onward, from hour to hour, and from day to day. It is in this way that the embryology of the Chick has been worked out by C. E. Von baer in his classical paper, and by foster and balfour in their Elements of Embryology. This method has the advantage that the reader acquires a View of the total condition of an organism in the separate stages of its development. A book of that kind is especially suitable for such persons as desire to acquaint themselves, by their own observation, with the embryology Of a single animal, as, for example, the Chick, by repeating the investigations of others. It is, on the contrary, less adapted to those who wish to acquire a connected view of the development of the separate organs, as the eye, the heart, the brain, etc. For the formation of these will of course be treated of at different places in describing younger and Older embryos. In order to procure a general survey of the course of development of an organ, the reader must consult various places in the text-book, and collect for himself what relates to the subject. Excerpt from Human Embryology and Morphology The Author hopes he has prepared a work which will prove useful not only to students proceeding for Higher Examinations in Anatomy and Surgery but also to men actively engaged in practice. Every day conditions come under their notice which can be explained only by a reference to Embryology. He has sought to sketch as brie y and clearly as possible the history of the developing human body. History is the best key to an understanding of the present conditions of a country; the Embryologist and Comparative Anatomist are the dual historians of the human body. Excerpt from Experimental Embryology A transparent egg as it develops is one of the most fascinating objects in the world of living beings. The continuous change in form that takes place from hour to hour puzzles us by its very simplicity. The geometric patterns that present themselves at every turn invite mathematical analyses. The constancy and orderliness of the whole series of events, repeating themselves a thousandfold in every batch of eggs, assures us of a causal sequence conspiring to create an object whose parts are adjusted to make a machine of extraordinary complexity.
