Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Excerpt from Types of British Vegetation: By Members of the General Committee for the Survey and Study of British Vegetation The work Of systematically surveying vegetation and recording the results on vegetation maps was begun in Scotland by the late Robert Smith in the Closing years of last century, and continued by his brother, 1 G. Smith, and various other workers. In 1904 these workers formed a committee, with the somewhat ponderous title of The Central Committee for the Survey and Study Of British Vegetation, to organise and facilitate work on these lines. Excerpt from Storm Rainfall of Eastern United States This report sets forth the results of what is probably the most extended study of storm rainfall that has ever been undertaken. When an engineering examination Of the Miami Valley was begun, immediately after the subsidence Of the great flood of March, 1913, for the purpose of determining the best plan for preventing damage by future floods, an investigation of rainfall and runofl' conditions was one of the first lines of attack. Although the 1913 flood seems to have been by far the largest that has occurred in this valley since its first occupation by white settlers a little over 100 years ago, it was soon apparent that the records Of daily discharge Of the Miami River going back only to 1892, and the local rainfall records Of somewhat longer duration, afforded but a poor basis for the determination of the most probable size, frequency, and distribution Of future floods.
