Excerpt from The Deeper Causes of the War When I first read these admirable essays of M. Hovelaque, I thought them;, as I still think them, the truest and most illuminative statement anywhere to be found of the causes which have unchained this tempest of war. A nation, when it is at war, is commonly in no mood to consider the causes of the evil which has befallen it. The wickedness of the adversary is accepted as a sufficient explanation. Everything that lends itself to this explanation is eagerly grasped at, and everything that contradicts or supplements it is impatiently rejected. We feel that there will be time enough to understand our enemy when we have defeated him. Evidence as to character is not taken until sentence has been passed. Yet this impatience of the operations of the sympathetic intelligence has its dangers even in war. Some acquaintance with the beliefs and aspirations of the other party is necessary for a good war, as it is for a good peace. Men are never wholly wicked. Excerpt from The War: Its Causes and Consequences The age is revolutionary. The present is an epoch in the world's history of transition - a sort of moral exodus of the nations - which has lasted now some three centuries; and no stability in governments anywhere, much less here, can be looked for until the passage from the old regime to the new has been completed. To a close observer, the social ebullition in this coun try has long been of a threatening character. From the birth of our government, its elements have been in an uneasy state; and the bosom of society has more than once been agitated by the throes of coming convulsions. The time has arrived for these inevitable disturbances, so long concealed, to manifest their dangerous activity. An open rupture is at last reached; and however it may be allayed temporarily, will be again and again renewed until the foundations of society are broken up, or the principles which now lie at its base are extruded, or so modified by the introduction of others that their excesses will be entirely counteracted. Excerpt from The Causes and Consequences of the War Neither passion nor revenge, but foresight, must inspire the treaty to come. I have hoped to contribute something towards it by trying to eliminate worn-out dynastic traditions, old diplomatic formulae for so long accepted as international currency, the untruths and half truths of historical law, vague ideas about races and nationalities, inexact and deceptive catchwords, and to replace them by the solid conception, after the manner of Bentham, of a utilitarian policy. Excerpt from The Origin, Causes and Object of the War IN response to many requests for publica tion in full of the lectures delivered under the title of The Origin, Causes and Object of the War, an attempt has been made to give the substance of many lectures in the form of one. Over twenty have been delivered in various parts of South Africa, and the blendings of so many reports is not easy. Many inter esting details and nearly all the illustra tive incidents have been omitted to keep the publication within reasonable limits. If there is some repetition of important matter it is merely because complete rewriting and recasting would have been necessary to avoid it. Excerpt from Causes That Led to the War Between the States This paper, or series of papers, originated in a request, seconded by an ardent desire on the part of the writer, to place in the hands of the Daughters of the Confederacy in succinct and convenient form the imperishable truths and incontrovertible facts pertaining to the spirit and origin of the causes that led to the war between the States; thus enabling them more fully to grasp and disseminate those truths among their own membership and hand them down unalloyed and unperverted to future generations of our sons and daughters. The task, once undertaken, was found to be so wide in scope and so comprehensive in character, both as to time and events, that it was impracticable to handle it properly and satisfactorily within the prescribed limits of a single paper and, hence, the treatise has, perforce, grown and amplified into its present form and dimensions. No sadder and more humiliating spectacle presents itself to the men and women of "The Sixties" than to see and hear their children or children's children deprecating or apologizing for the heroic course of action followed by their parents and grandparents during the trying and eventful years of those glorious but terrible times. Excerpt from War Studies 1: Root-Causes of the War, 2, Peace With Honour In the coming harvest the reapers will bind the tares in bundles to burn them, but let them spare those ignorant and innocent millions, and even those docile and guileless scholars, whose only crime has been their mistaken loyalty to a hopelessly corrupt mediaeval autocracy. To-day comes the heart-breaking news that Antwerp has fallen. Belgium's agony is England's supreme warning.
