Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ... BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES. TOWN OF PETERBOROUGH. HOMAS ARMSTRONG, of Peterborough, was a native of King's County, Ireland, where he was born February 24th, 1818--being second in a family of five sons and one daughter. His father was a captain in the British army; and, being retired on half pay, came out with the "Peter Robinson Emigration Colony," and received the appointment of chief of the commissariat for the said colony, with headquarters at "Scott's Plains." He also received a grant of land for his services in the army. At the time of the rebellion he was on active service as an officer of militia. He died at Peterborough, in 1854, in the sixty-second year of his age. Mr. Armstrong has lived nearly his whole.life in what is now the Town of Peterborough; during which time he has been witness to its wonderful development, and taken part with greater or less degree of activity in all matters of public interest which have stirred the community during the last half century. He was an intelligent and wellinformed gentleman, and popular with all who knew him. DR. WM. BELL, of Peterborough, is a native of Cumberland, England, where he was born in 1806, both his parents being also natives of that place. His father was Abram Bell, a house-builder and ship-owner, who came to Canada with a portion of his family in 1830, and after some years' residence near the City of Quebec, removed to Peterborough County in 1837. The subject of this sketch, who was the youngest of a family of five sons and one daughter, after receiving his preliminary education, studied medicine at Guy's Hospital, London, England, graduating therefrom in 1836. In 1837 he practiced medicine for a short time at Trenton, Bay Quinte, and in 1838 settled in Otonabee, where he combined...

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from A Sketch of the Early Settlement and Subsequent Progress of the Town of Peterborough: And of Each Township in the County of Peterborough The writer of the following pages has had in view the collection and preservation of reminiscences of the early days when the town and county of Peterborough were first settled. This portion of the task seemed incom plete, without a summary of leading events in town and county to the present time.' He has endeavoured to approach the subject as impartially, and to record the facts as accurately as possible. The events ot the earlier years were gathered from such of the first settlers as still survive, and although, as might be expected, slight discrepancies were sometimes found in the recollections of these different observers, these were only upon minor matters of trifling import; so that the general details may be relied on as correct. For the events of later years, and especially since 1845 printed and oflicial documents have been to some extent available; but it is to be regretted that in none of our public offices has much attention been shewn to preserve and hand down to futurity, current and evanescent records of the time, which will, by and by, he of rare value and historic interest. Whether the facts here recorded (most of them for the first time) were of sufficient interest and importance to justify their collection in permanent form; and whether the task has been accomplished in a preper and worthy manner, must be left to the public to decide; to whom it is now offered, to be judged upon its merits. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe book explores Peterborough's history from the seventh century, describing its destruction by Danish raiders and its restoration with a new abbey. It remained a small market city until the 19th century when it changed, dramatically, into a railway and industrial centre. " There is great capacity for further reading but this lavish, and always interesting book makes an excellent starter." Rutland Times
