Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Man It is hardly necessary to remind the reader that almost every section and subsection of this book touches con troversial points, and that no two writers will agree on every detail of such a subject as this. I have spared no pains to secure accuracy of fact, but am very conscious, in other respects, of the limitations of this volume; some of these are due to the necessary limits of space, though far more to the demands the subject makes on both theological learning and Christian experience. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God The work that was entrusted to me by the General Editors of the International Theological Library was simply the presentation of the conception of God that is characteristic of the Christian religion. I was not sent to search for God, but rather to report as well as I might what the Christian faith testifies concerning him. It has seemed to me that this single commission was enough for me to undertake, and I have attempted nothing more. No report of the literature of the subject will be found upon these pages, nor any quotation of other men's work, nor any controversy. It is the sole endeavour of the book to set forth the Christian doctrine of God for the present day: not the doctrine of the past, or of the future, but the thought of God that we may now entertain if we follow the leading of Jesus Christ the revealer. So far as I have the power, I have sought to be faithful both to the ancient light to the modern, and I have hoped that my presentation might bear reasonably well the tests of the present time. There are many ways of dealing with the vast and glorious theme, and certainly there must be room for a book that simply aims to show forth doctrine as Christian faith may receive it now. I have written in the full conviction that the light which Jesus Christ gives us upon God is the true light, and that God is such a Being as he inspires us to love and trust. This clear and concise text helps readers grasp the doctrines of the Christian faith considered basic from the earliest days of Christianity. Ronald Heine, an internationally known expert on early Christian theology, developed this book from a course he teaches that has been refined through many years of classroom experience. Heine primarily uses the classical Christian doctrines of the Nicene Creed to guide students into the essentials of the faith. This broadly ecumenical work will interest students of church history or theology as well as adult Christian education classes in church settings. Sidebars identify major personalities and concepts, and each chapter concludes with discussion questions and suggestions for further reading.

Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Salvation The aim of the present work is to present a biblical, historical, and constructive discussion of the Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend themselves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find something in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. The present discussion presupposes a general knowledge of Biblical Theology and of the History of Christian Doctrine, such as is furnished by the relevant sections of my Theology of the New Testament and Professor Fisher's History of Christian Doctrine, earlier volumes of the International Theological Library. Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Man: Or the Anthropology and Psychology of Scripture The aim is to present in one view the Bible Theology and Philosophy of Man and his Nature. What is claimed for this endeavour, in the specific department of Biblical Psychology, is to have called attention to the distinction which the Bible attributes to spirit, as the highest element in man's constitution, and on the possession of which is grounded its unique doctrine of man's likeness to his Maker. It also claims to be a consistent exposi tion of the relations of soul and spirit in man. Rejecting as unscriptural and unsupported by reason the notion which founds upon the Bible use of these terms a Tripartite Theory of man's nature, cause is yet shown why the neglect of that usage, as a meaningless parallelism, must yield to accurate exegesis and historic fact. These two discussions specially exemplify that which it is the object of the whole treatise to maintain, namely, that a study of the psychological ideas of Scrip ture throws valuable sidelights on its doctrinal teaching. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Reconciliation is a term of wide scope and various applica tion, and it is hardly possible to conceive a life or a religion which should dispense with it. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. They may interpret it as physical in its origin when it is really ethical, or as the misapprehension of a moral order when it is really antagonism to a personal God, and in either case the reconciliation they seek will fail to give the peace of which they are in quest. Nevertheless, reconciliation and nothing else is what they want, and its place in religion is central and vital. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Sin I had intended to enlarge this volume so as to embrace a special discussion of the Augustinian and subsequent developments of the Doctrine of Sin in the thought of the Church. I wished also to treat of the bearing on this doctrine of certain modern theories, from the Optimism of Leibnitz to the Pessimism of Schopenhauer and Hartmann. But the consideration of these later aspects of the subject must be deferred. It was deemed desirable that the present Lectures should appear with out delay, and as much as possible in the form in which they were delivered.
