Excerpt from The Chemistry of Gas Manufacture, Vol. 1: A Practical Handbook on the Production, Purification, and Testing of Illuminating and Fuel Gas, and on the Bye-Products of Gas Manufacture The extensive revision and enlargement of this handbook, which the advances in the Gas Industry made imperative as soon as the Second Edition was exhausted, practically precluded its continued publication as a single volume. The manufacture and use of Acetylene, to which a chapter had been devoted in that edition, could no longer be adequately or appropriately dealt with in such a manner, and a new handbook on "Acetylene" was, therefore, written by Mr. F. H. Leeds, in collaboration with the undersigned, and published in 1903. The revision of the rest of this work, as projected, entailed the re-writing of the major part of it, and in order neither to delay publication unduly nor to make too bulky a volume, it was decided to publish as a first volume the portion treating of the Materials and Processes of Gas Manufacture before the completion of the revision of the remainder of the book. The volume, published accordingly in 1904, has been revised throughout, and several pages of fresh matter have been added for the present new edition. A second volume, covering the "Testing and Use of Gas," is in course of preparation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
