DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Catskill region is rightly celebrated for its beautiful landscape, fascinating history and prehistory. However, few may be aware of the role this region played, and continues to play, in the unfolding story of the rocks at our feet. The science of "soft rock" geology emerged in the nineteenth century when it became widely known that sedimentary rocks are the result of erosion, transport and deposition of ancient sediment, often by water. It was recognized that modern sediments are typically laid down on top of older ones and that ancient rocks could be interpreted in a similar way. As a result, it became apparent that one can use superposition of rock strata to determine relative time for the fossils they contain, thereby revealing the grand panoply of change in plants and animals over Earth's long geological history.
