Excerpt from The California Teacher, Vol. 5: A Journal of School and Home Education, and Organ of the Department of Public Instruction; From July 1867 to June 1868 WE live in a practical, mattenof-fact age. The universal cry is for practical men. Modern philosophy, in harmony with the times, is experimental - rejects mysticism, tends to rationalism, and deals chiefly with great material questions. It demands leaders and la borers whose intellectual habits have been moulded in the schools of experience; and the tendency is everywhere seen to subordinate, almost to ignore, those studies and pursuits which do not, to the popular understanding, appear to keep step with what is called the march of improvement. Success is accepted as at once the test and the measure of abil ity, whether we speak of the triumphs of the forum, the cabinet, the sacred desk, the pursuits of commerce and industry, or what ever department of intellectual labor is taken as the standard of comparison. We cannot object to the judgment which is rendered upon this issue, provided the success is a genuine fruit of labor and talent, combined with the training of experience, and is not the offspring of a lucky accident. Mankind never fail to appreciate him who has at once the power and the disposition to serve them in whatever sphere of usefulness or honor he may elect. Just in proportion to his power and willingness to serve will he be used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A little girl and a refrigerator box go on many adventures as they imagine all the things they can be in this debut picture book from Kim Howard and Megan Lotter, Grace and Box... Grace and Box have become fast friends. Box delivered a refrigerator earlier in the week and by the end of it, Grace and Box had already been to space, gone camping, and explored the depths of the sea together. But on Sunday, Grace notices something’s wrong with her buddy. Box has some rips and crumples that Band-Aids, ice packs, and rest on the couch can’t seem to heal. Grace certainly doesn't want these adventures to end, so she is determined to fix Box so that they can continue their play together! A universal friendship (child and box) has come alive in this imaginative and humorous picture book. The depths of friendships run deep with children, even if they're just boxes to us!
