"This is a lovely and much needed book that provides an opportunity to open the conversation regarding bullying with our youngest children. In a 'question and brainstorm answers' format, Ms. Kempner's book will enable families to identify specific episodes of bullying that can occur in preschool and elementary school age children. Once identified, the readers are asked to think of alternative ways to handle the situations in which bullying can, but doesn't have to, occur." --Susan D. Boulware, M.D, Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics, Yale Medical University Endorsed and supported by The Turner's Syndrome Society of the United States, TSSUS This anti-bullying book is designed to teach children to have empathy towards other children that may be perceived as "different." The books helps children realize how painful it is to be teased, isolated or bullied, which hopefully will inspire them to refrain from treating others in this way. From the author: We need to come together as parents, professionals and educators to increase the awareness of the "differences" in many of our children today. We need to teach our children tolerance and acceptance of their peers who are so-called "different." As diagnoses of Autism, ADHD and other syndromes and issues are on the rise, we have no choice but to use awareness and understanding to reinforce empathy in our children. Children that are "different" should not be made to feel like outcasts; they need to be understood, not shunned or ignored. The author: Jennifer Kempner, LCSWR is a mother of three children and a New York State licensed clinical therapist. Stand Up, Fight Back is the story of little 9 year old boy in 4th grade being terrorized by bullies every day. It started on the school bus with verbal taunts by the bullies to all the kids. Everyday they systematically made their way around the bus teasing everyone. When it was my turn for ridicule, I tried to ignore them and hoped they would just go away. Eventually the bullies would push further and be more aggressive with their attacks to get a reaction. As they increased pressure, I would try to retreat further into my dark hole of emptiness to get away. This drove them more and more to hurt me. Eventually I caved and started to cry. It was a huge victory for the bullies to get someone to cry. As months went on the attacks became more frequent and also became physical. They would slap my head, flick my ears, punch and poke me. They would pull my shoes off and even throw them out the bus window. And the bullying made it's way off the bus and into school, the schoolyard and even out in public places. I couldn't get away. This book details the dark plight of bullying and abuse that goes on every day in schools all over the country. You hear all the details about how that little boy was systematically broken down into the darkest lows where his soul could go. I discuss the failures of the system along the way as I was being bullied. From the Bus Driver that saw it all, to the principal that heard first hand from my mother about how I looked getting off the bus being beaten to finally the bully's parents denying any wrong doing of their son. Many adults knew what was going on but none did much about it. I conclude the book with some details on how to fix this epidemic. It won't be easy and we'll never wipe it out completely. But we can take a stand against bullying, but we have to do it together. And we have to start now. The first step begins with the parents and ends with the child being bullied. Stand Up, Fight Back.

"The book describes childhood bullying from the vantage point of those victims, bullies, and bystanders who are now adults ... discusses how lives have been changed, and explores the range of reactions adults exhibit. The research gathered for this book, through interviews with over 800 people, points out that even adult decision-making is often altered by the victimization they experience as children at the hands of peers, siblings, parents, or educators."--From publisher description.
