The electron density distribution of the F region above the North American continent is studied in detail during a magnetic disturbance that occurred on 28 May 1970. Using profiles deduced from vertical incidence ionograms recorded at 11 ionosonde locations, it is seen that the maximum electron density, the height of the maximum density and the semi-thickness of the F region are severely modified during the course of the disturbance. The behavior of the ionosphere during the most disturbed phase of the magnetic storm is such that the disturbance associated effects are seen over the entire continent. The recovery of the ionosphere toward normal conditions does not show the same spatial extent, however. It is seen that the rate at which the ionosphere above a specific location recovers depends not only on the latitude but also the longitude of the location. This would seem to indicate that there is much local control in the behavior of the ionosphere during the recovery portion of magnetic storm. (Author).

The results of a study undertaken to determine the feasibility of employing synoptic mapping to improve ionospheric forecasting capabilities are presented. Using electron density data obtained from 16 ionosonde stations located in North America and Greenland during the time period mid-April through July 1970, the temporal and spatial variability of the ionosphere was assessed.
