In this clear and readable book, the authors show that research guided by the soul is rich, passionate, and meaningful. Borrowing from their expertise as scholars and teachers, they blend philosophy and practice to describe what scholarly research undertaken from the perspective of the soul might look like and to account for the exceptional experience of psychological inquiry at its best. The third, expanded edition includes two new chapters. The new second chapter offers a basic introduction to depth psychology for thoughtful, inquisitive readers, one that follows its connections to myth, religion, and indigenous practices of healing. A new seventh chapter on deep writing explores qualities such as beauty, craft, the fluidity and precision of language, and soulful communion between author and reader. This edition also enlarges the scope of the conversation by including more expert voices, including philosophers, poets, and novelists as well as scholars of religion, anthropology, mythology, and neurobiology.

Depth Psychology and Climate Change offers a sensitive and insightful look at how ideas from depth psychology can move us beyond psychological overwhelm when facing the ecological disaster of climate change and its denial. Integrating ideas from disciplines including anthropology, politics, spirituality, mythology and philosophy, contributors consider how climate change affects psychological well-being and how we can place hope and radical uncertainty alongside rage and despair. The book explores symbols of transformation, myths and futures; and is structured to encourage regular reflection. Each contributor brings their own perspective – green politics, change and loss, climate change denial, consumerism and our connection to nature – suggesting responses to mental suffering arising from an unstable and uncertain international outlook. They examine how subsequent changes in consciousness can develop. This book will be essential reading for analytical psychologists, Jungian analysts and psychotherapists, as well as academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian studies. It will also be of great interest to academics and students of the politics and policy of climate change, anthropology, myth and symbolism and ecopsychology, and to anyone seeking a new perspective on the climate emergency.

In the past, depth psychology has largely confined its reflections upon animals to human dreams and encounters. In Minding the Animal Psyche, Spring: A Journal of Archetype and Culture, seeks to greatly broaden this inquiry, turning the psychological eye from its inward gaze to honor and explore the psyches of our animal kin and the mutual interrelationships that exist among species. As our global society moves from anthropocentrism to ecocentricism, individuation of the ecopsyche mandates that we reflect on what animals bring into our lives and what we bring to the psyches of the animals with which we live. Psychology's acknowledgement of the animal psyche"in the same way that we do with the human psyche"represents a dramatic, expansive shift and an exciting opportunity to bring insights from animal-oriented disciplines to depth psychology.

Since trauma is a thoroughly relational phenomenon, it is highly unpredictable, and cannot be made to fit within the scientific framework Freud so admired. In Toward a Psychology of Uncertainty: Trauma-Centered Psychoanalysis, Doris Brothers urges a return to a trauma-centered psychoanalysis. Making use of relational systems theory, she shows that experiences of uncertainty are continually transformed by the regulatory processes of everyday life such as feeling, knowing, forming categories, making decisions, using language, creating narratives, sensing time, remembering, forgetting, and fantasizing. Insofar as trauma destroys the certainties that organize psychological life, it plunges our relational systems into chaos and sets the stage for the emergence of rigid, life-constricting relational patterns. These trauma-generated patterns, which often involve denial of sameness and difference, the creation of complexity-reducing dualities, and the transformation of certainty into certitude, figure prominently in virtually all of the complaints for which patients seek analytic treatment. Analysts, she claims, are no more strangers to trauma than are their patients. Using in-depth clinical illustrations, Dr. Brothers demonstrates how a mutual desire to heal and to be healed from trauma draws patients and analysts into their analytic relationships. She recommends the reconceptualization of what has heretofore been considered transference and countertransference in terms of the transformation of experienced uncertainty. In her view the increased ability of both analytic partners to live with uncertainty is the mark of a successful treatment. Dr. Brothers’ perspective sheds fresh light on a variety of topics of great general interest to analysts as well as many of their patients, such as gender, the acceptance of death, faith, cult-like training programs, and burnout. Her discussions of these topics are enlivened by references to contemporary cinema and theatre.

Since the late 19th century, when the “new science” of psychology and interest in esoteric and occult phenomena converged – leading to the “discovery” of the unconscious – the dual disciplines of depth psychology and mysticism have been wed in an often unholy union. Continuing in this tradition, and the challenges it carries, this volume includes a variety of inter-disciplinary approaches to the study of depth psychology, mysticism, and mystical experience, spanning the fields of theology, religious studies, and the psychology of religion. Chapters include inquiries into the nature of self and consciousness, questions regarding the status and limits of mysticism and mystical phenomenon, and approaches to these topics from multiple depth psychological traditions.

Discover your own hero's journey and how to encourage others on their paths to self-understanding. In Depth Coaching, author Pat Adson explores the skills and attitudes needed to assist people in developing their full potential. As a detailed guide for therapists, life coaches and any one interested in helping others on the journey, this book provides the tools for an intense study of personal developmental issues. Based on the work of Carol Pearson, co-developer of the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator" instrument, Depth Coaching emphasizes the practice of positive psychology based on development rather than disease. Each section of the journey contains a workbook.Initially resisting the call to become a "life" coach, author and psychologist Pat Adson discovered the rewarding benefits of helping others explore paths to meaning and balance. She notes, however, that this is a vocation undertaken only after one has fulfilled his or her own journey. Inspired by Carol Pearson's work with self-development through archetypes, Adson set out to explore her own "hero's journey." The result of her exploration is this step-by-step guide created for all who wish to take the journey or to coach others on their paths."Coaching as a discipline," Adson tells readers, "is a client-centered way of working with individuals to help them achieve their goals, balance their lives, and attain fulfillment. Coaching focuses on clients' lifelong development rather than the remediation of past wounds. The coach and client collaborate as partners or peers in a relationship that is symmetric rather than paternalistic.Therapists, educators, and spiritual leaders will find Adson's methods useful in developing their own strengths as well as encouraging clients toward embarking on their personal journeys. Individuals and anyone who wishes to support themselves or others through growth and development will also find this work enlightening and helpful.

Contrary to what most self-help books claim, just writing won't help you; in fact, there's abundant evidence that the wrong kind of writing can be damaging. DeSalvo's program is based on the best available and most recent scientific studies about the efficacy of using writing as a restorative tool. With insight and wit, she illuminates how writers, from Virginia Woolf to Henry Miller to Audre Lorde to Isabel Allende, have been transformed by the writing process. Terrapsychological Inquiry is a qualitative research methodology seeking a form of inquiry that takes seriously our intense inner responses to the state of the natural world. Terrapsychology is a theory and practice approach that studies, from the standpoint of lived experience, how the world gets into the heart. Oceans and skies, trees and hills, rivers and soils, and even built things like houses, cities, ports, and planes: How do they show up for us inwardly? How do our moods, feelings, and dreams reflect what happens in the world? Terrapsychological Inquiry evolved over a decade of experimentation by graduate students, instructors, workshop leaders and presenters, and other embodied creatives to offer a truly Earth-honoring mode of story-based qualitative inquiry, one that changes all involved from passive spectators of the doings of the world into active, sensitive participants. Learn how to use this methodology of reenchantment in a variety of settings inside and outside academia, and by doing so reenter an animate world. Written in an engaging and accessible style, this introduction to a new research methodology will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental psychology, ecotherapy, and environment and sustainability studies more generally.
