Excerpt from The Analytical Distillation of Petroleum The importance of the problem discussed in this report was sug gested by Prof. George A. Hulett, of Princeton University, consulting chemist of the Bureau of Mines. Credit is due Prof. Hulett for his recognition of the need of undertaking the work and for constructive advice during its course. W. A. Williams, chief of the petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines, has at all times furnished hearty support to the work, and whatever measure of success it has attained is largely due to his interest and cooperation. Particular thanks are due Prof. Gellert Alleman, of Swarthmore College, and Dr. David T. Day, of the Bureau of Mines, for advice and for material assistance in the procuring of necessary apparatus. Excerpt from The Analytical Distillation of Petroleum and Its Products The bureau has recommended a distillation method for testing gasoline and certain other refined products. The requirements of this particular type of analysis, namely, a convenient and moderately accurate basis of comparison, are notably different from those of the analysis of crude petroleum. The modified A. S. T. M. Method recommended by the bureau 3 and adopted by various organizations and laboratories, provides a simple means of comparing the range of boiling points of different samples. It is not designed to separate fractions for detailed examination, and although used for this pur pose at times is not as satisfactory as other methods. It is used and recommended by the bureau for the testing of a variety of refined products including gasoline, naphtha, and kerosene, for which the temperature to be measured does not exceed about 320 C. (608 E). It could also be used for other products to measure distillation range up to some mark not in excess of 820 C., above which cracking is likely to occur. The present report describes the apparatus and methods used by the bureau for the routine distillation analysis of crude oil and lubricating oil and describes also apparatus developed for certain types of research. Some of the methods for studying the fractions separated are described, also for dehydrating emulsified oils, which is often a necessary preliminary to analytical distillation. Crude Oil Chemistry is foremost a scientifically exact guide to the full family of classical and modern analytical and process technologies in petroleum refining. In widening its vision also to incorporate a geological history of petroleum formation, present-day geopolitical and economic issues, and approaches to redress and improve the delicate ties between the petroleum industry and the environment, this reference succeeds as a total representation of the factors going into the chemistry of crude oil and their outward bound ramifications. The book thoroughly evaluates the chemistry and processing of low API gravity high-sulfur heavy crude oil increasingly relied on in the industry.

Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils or aetherolea, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted. Essential oils are generally used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products. Various essential oils have been used medicinally at different periods in history. Medical applications proposed by those who sell medicinal oils range from skin treatments to remedies for cancer, and often are based solely on historical accounts of use of essential oils for these purposes. Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine that claims that essential oils and other aromatic compounds have curative effects. Oils are volatilized or diluted in carrier oil and used in massage, diffused in the air by a nebulizer, heated over a candle flame, or burned as incense. This book describes about the physicochemical properties, chemical composition, distillation, yield, quality of essential oils, process of extraction of essential oils, manufacture of essential oils, products derived from essential oils and so on. The book in your hands contains formulae, processes, and test parameters of different types of essential oils derived from different natural sources. This is very helpful book for new entrepreneurs, professionals, institutions and for those who are already engaged in this field.

Petroleum refining involves refining crude petroleum as well as producing raw materials for the petrochemical industry. This book covers current refinery processes and process-types that are likely to come on-stream during the next three to five decades. The book includes (1) comparisons of conventional feedstocks with heavy oil, tar sand bitumen, and bio-feedstocks; (2) properties and refinability of the various feedstocks; (3) thermal processes versus hydroprocesses; and (4) the influence of refining on the environment.
