DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Dialogues Founded Upon Butler's Analogy of Religion The history and design of this book may be briefly stated. The great work of Bishop Butler is now regarded with mixed feelings by various writers. By some it is stigmatized as obscure and unsatisfactory; to others it appears satisfactory, but still obscure. The character thus assigned to the book has diminished the number of its readers. People are under a reasonable apprehension, that it is mere waste of time to study what is obscure, when the same can be found clearly expressed elsewhere. This, however, is much to be regretted: for no writer has combined, in greater degree, philosophical acumen and judicial fairness with a thoroughly religious tone of mind. And no work can be found, stating so completely, yet concisely, the principal grounds upon which natural and revealed religion claim the obedience of mankind. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Dialogues Founded Upon Butler's Analogy of Religion The constant references to this argument, with which the Analogy abounds, are likely to be little regarded by those who are not familiar with the grounds on which it rests. For Bishop Butler does not pause to prone the principles on which he argues, but simply assumes them. It is Obvious, then, that they, who reject the argument from design, cannot Obtain satisfaction from the treatise: they will find it Obscure, because it tacitly assumes what they reject. And they, who are not familiar with the details of this argument, will find the method perplexing, because it takes for granted what they have yet to learn.
