Excerpt from d104ile Fabrics Under its widest acceptation the word textile means every kind of stuff, no matter its material, wrought in the loom. Whether, therefore, the threads are spun from the produce of the animal, vegetable, or mineral kingdom whether of sheep's wool, goats' hair, camels' wool, or camels' hair 3 whether of flax, hemp, mallow, or the filaments drawn out of the leaves of plants of the lily and asphodel tribes of flowers, or the fibrous coating about pods, or cotton; whether of gold, silver, or of any other metal the webs from all such materials are textiles. Unlike these are other appliances for garmwt-making in many countries; and of such materials not the least curious, if not odd to our ideas, is paper, which is so much employed for the purpose by the Japanese. A careful reference to a map of the world will show us the materials which from the earliest ages the inhabitants of the world had at hand, in every clime, for making articles of dress. In all the colder regions the well-furred skins of several families of beasts could, by the ready help of a thorn for a needle and of the animal's own sinews for thread, be fashioned after a manner into various kinds of clothing. Excerpt from Design in Textile Fabrics The rapid disappearance of the old apprentice system, the growth of large establishments, and the consequent subdivision of labour, accompanied by the ever-increasing demand for fabrics of a more artistic character to be applied to useful purposes, make it imperative upon the would-be designer or manufacturer to understand more fully than he has done in the_ past the principles upon which fabrics should be constructed, so as to fulfil all the necessary conditions. He must work on sound principles and leave nothing to chance. The reader must not expect to go through this work in a hurried manner, or to thoroughly grasp all the details of the subject without further effort. Within the compass of this volume it is, of course, impossible to enter into all the particulars which would make the student at once perfectly conversant with the whole; but an effort has been made to-lay down the leading principles clearly and completely, and to guide the student generally, rather than to enter too closely into minor details, which can onlv be sufficiently mastered by actual practice in the mill or workshop. Excerpt from Textile Fabrics of Ancient Peru In open work, and especially in that variety intended as a foundation for embroidery, what is known as the twined combination is employed. In this the woof threads are twined together in pairs, inclosing in each half turn one of the warp threads. In this way the mesh is firmly fixed, after the manner of a net. This combination is not adapted to the weaving of compact cloths, nor to the introduction of varied orna ments. It is much used in basketry. A number of varieties of combination are sometimes employed in a single piece, all being woven into the same warp. It is also very usual, as already noted, to see cloths made up of variously woven and diversely colored sections stitched together. Excerpt from The Dyeing of d104ile Fabrics The object of this Manual is to provide the teacher and student of Dyeing with a useful text-book giving exact scientific and practical information. It is intended also to supply the Dyer with explanations of the scientific principles involved in the operations of his art, in order that he may take a more intelligent interest in his work, and be stimulated to criticise it, and to determine, by means of well-devised experiments, whether his methods are rational and incapable of improvement, or the reverse. Certain details have been furnished relating to the mode of applying the various Colouring Matters and Mordants, but these must not be regarded as fixed and unchangeable receipts, but rather as starting-points for further experimental work. The Art of Dyeing being a special branch of Chemical Technology, no apology is offered for leavening the work with a wholesome amount of chemistry. The Dyer is especially urged to make himself acquainted with the general principles of chemical science, for assuredly the more such knowledge is brought to bear upon every detail of the art, the more rapid will be its progress. It seemed necessary to give the somewhat complex chemical symbols and scientific names of the Coal-Tar colours in order to identify them, since, in the course of time, many of the present commercial names may be replaced by others, or applied to colouring matters not yet introduced. Excerpt from Household Textiles Books on the subject of textiles have usually been written from the standpoint of the manufacturer or of the textile chemist. It has been the purpose of the writer to bring together in this book the general facts of most interest to the consumer. Those points have been chosen which will give a broader understanding of the textile market and aid in the selection and use of textile fabrics. Technical terms and manufacturing processes have been given only in so far as they give a general understanding of the conversion of fibers into cloth and throw light on the possibilities of adulteration. Information has been gathered from many sources, from books, government reports, visits to factories, shops. And museums. Suggestions and references for a more extended study have been given. Kate Heintz Watson's book d104iles and Clothing is a textbook for those who work with various fabrics, focused specifically on the creation of various articles of clothing. d104iles and Clothing is divided into three distinct parts. Part one serves as an introductory chapter. The arts of spinning and weaving are discussed in depth. This is followed by a summary of popular textiles, including wool, flax, cotton, and silk. The history of these textiles, as well as their modern usage, are explained in detail. Part two focuses specifically on hand sewing. Common stitches and their uses are carefully outlined. Ornamental stitches, hems, fastening, and plackets are all covered in depth in this chapter. In the third part of this book, Watson provides instructions and suggestions for the creation of specific garments, including dresses, skirts, jackets, and children's clothing. Photos are presented throughout the book to assist the reader, however it is difficult to see fine details in these images. As this book was originally designed as a textbook, there are also study questions presented at the conclusion of each chapter. Reviewing these questions will assist the reader that is new to working with textiles. A detailed index concludes the book, making this text usable as a reference guide. Excerpt from d104ile Design and Colour: Elementary Weaves and Figured Fabrics AN exhaustive treatise on the designing and colouring of textile fabrics has been found by the writer to be much beyond the scope of a single volume, and this book deals chiefly with cloths that are composed of one series of warp and one series of weft threads. The subject is continued in a second volume - entitled Advanced d104ile Design - which treats on compound and special classes of cloths.
